Last night we stayed in the Holiday Inn at Colchester.
Some interesting observations were : a gadget where the frig would usually be that had us perplexed for a while. , however being the intelligent one I reckoned it was a trouser press! Of course I was right!
Instead of heavy block out curtains they had decorative sliding wooden panels that you pulled across. Perfect for me who does not like light in the room to sleep, and with twilight, the perfect solution.
At breakfast this morning I noted the pink grapefruit was a favorite .
In the hot foods was a favorite of Poppa's ..... Black pudding! Of course Dad had to try it and so I had to too . I was surprised at the texture of it, not unlike a sausage and their pork and Cumberland sausages were very nice.
The trip yesterday from Saffron Walden to Colchester was pleasant.
If you are wondering about the name... Yes it was a place where the Saffron Crocus was farmed in the 1300's. It declined in the17th century changing to malting and brewing and farming. There are fields (paddocks!) wherever you look.
Poppies grow wild along the roads and at the edge of the fields, sometimes in the crops and it looks gorgeous.
There were some fields that were purple to look at, I asked Bill what is was when we got back, he said it is Linseed.
We went in to the town of Colchester and walked down the High street.
The Castle was in the middle set in a lawned area.
In the garden there was about three hedge/bushes that were made to look like animals. I took a photo for Jade and Caleb!
We then went in to look at the Castle displays.
Colchester was a Roman stronghold and a temple was built there apparently ; but the Britons revolted and it was burned down.
The castle walls are 12 feet thick.
It was very interesting reading and looking at the artifacts that have been uncovered. Another interesting thing was that the dungeons were used as air raid shelters during the war.
Where we parked our car was the remains of the city wall that had been built around the then town of Colchester.
Would you believe we were there on a day when several schools were there on a field trip ...... Natalie will know what I mean when I say... I will say no more!!!
After that we decided to go down to Clacton on sea, to see the English beaches.
Well! We got the surprise of our lives to see wind turbines about 1/2 a mile out from the shore.
There was a large pier and lots of people were there on the Promenade.
We did see some sand but not where I took a photo. There were some gorgeous old hotels that would have been the Ritz in their day, looking a bit tired now though.
We meandered around the streets for a bit looking at the different types of homes.
One thing I have noted is that even if it is a scruffy looking place there is a Jag, Mercedes, BMW, Audi or Lexus parked in the driveway!
AND ON THE STREET! Talk about running the gauntlet trying to get along the streets.
We have found that Tesco and Sainsbury's are like the old Coles Cafeterias or KMart's that used to have an eatery. So we have grabbed a bite to eat there on a couple of occasions.
We returned to Bill and Audrey's at about 8.30 pm.
