Today we rented a car and took a drive out to the Blue Mountains in Katoomba, New South Wales. This is a gorgeous place, filled with massive trees, birds, rock structures and flies. Lots of flies. After taking a walk round the Three Sisters (three similarly-sized rocks that carry a story...which I won't go into now), we stopped for a picnic in, it would seem, somebody's back garden. Luckily we survived it without even a cursory "get off my land!" and got back on our feet.We hopped on a train which took us deep into the national park's rainforest. The ride was something special itself, being incredibly steep and surprisingly fast. A cable car took us back up again where we stopped for a much needed drink and a chance to see the incredible vista that this park had to offer. Another, this time horizontal cable car journey took us back to our car and we sped off to meet the cousin of my parents' friends, who took us to see what some of Sydney's 'burbs had to offer in the name of nightlife. We were all gobsmacked by the array and quality of the social clubs around the area, all of which offer food, drink and other facilities at around $10 for four years: a bit steep I know, but what can you do? As Sydney has quite stringent gambling laws, it meant that any profits made by the clubs through their poker machines ("pokies") had to be ploughed back into improving the club for its members. We'd never seen anything like us, and this was taken as a cue for Sue, her twins and our own parents to set about convincing us to emigrate. It nearly worked.
