We began the day by indulging in our free breakfast – bagels, cereal, toast, muffins, juice etc, yum!
We then went for a mooch in town. Was weird exploring a city again – our instinct was to find a Tim Hortons but this wasn’t easy! We mooched through the main shopping area, Robson Street before making our way to the harbour where we sat and watched seaplanes taking off and landing for a while. Everywhere was very clean – as Canada is and Vancouver grew on us the more we saw of it! It is a very green city (as in lots of trees/parks) in comparison with Toronto and Calgary.
We saw huge ships and cruise liners and some posh looking hotels! We then found the lookout tower and had to go up it to compare it to the CN tower and Calgary tower! It had no glass floor so it was already winning in my eyes! Vancouver looked huge from up the tower yet it is only the size of Sheffield! (500k ish) Bizarre! Greater Vancouver is much much bigger and much of this is what we could see from the tower.
We were then reunited with Tims! Just after leaving the tower which made our day!
We spent the afternoon in Stanley park which was lovely as it was chilled, peaceful and sunny! There are lots of things to see and do but it’s also nice to just walk around. They had about eight totem poles which were cool – Mark wouldn’t let me buy one! Wonder why!
Back in town we went to the Imax cinema to watch Alaska: Spirit of the Wild. It was a 3D film (only 40mins) but it was about how the world was in the ice age and how Alaska has remained pretty much the same and the journey a lot of animals and people take before and after winter. Was interesting to see how whales worked together to catch food and how bears catch fish, they look so cute!
Our ticket for the observation tower was valid all day so we went back up again this evening to see the city at night. Our camera doesn’t like taking good night photo’s so had to video instead. We headed back to the hostel as we were both shattered and needed to plan our visit to Vancouver Island.
We have a couple from Australia with us tonight – the guy from Tazmania, where I’ve always wanted to go has motivated me to try and persuade Mark! The girl is from Melbourne.
Meeting a family friend tomorrow, looking forward to it as it will be nice to see someone we know and who knows Vancouver well!
