Mark & Robyn's Travels
Remember yesterday when I said it could only get better--well I lied. At 6:30 in the morning the construction crew on the Westin next door began working, I should say hammering. I was already up and sat out on the balcony because the rain was gone and it was a nice sunny day. Then Robyn got up and asked me if I had called the front desk to extend our check-out to the late time of 11 am. When I called they told me in a pleasant southern voice, sorry but all the late check-outs have been taken. Well, excuuuuse me, we did not think of doing this yesterday with everything else going on, but I did not think this would be a problem. Well that's what I get for thinking; I have been told I should stop doing that. So as we are getting our breakfast together and trying to organize our **** to get out by 10, the doorbell to the condo rings. Before I can answer, the door is opened by the cleaning crew (let me remind you it is 8:30 am.) The woman was very apologetic, but said she was told the unit was VD; I just looked at her. She said, "See, the paper says VD." I continued staring and she says, "You know, Vacant and Dirty." I said we are checking out at 10 am and she apologized again. I just sighed and closed the door. What a great start to the day. We got all our bags packed and was ready to start moving them to the car. When I opened the door the cleaning crew was still standing there. I guess they had been told to stay outside our condo until we had left. We made darn sure it was 10 am before we were completely out. What a joke to have a 10 am checkout considering you are paying nearly $600 a night!
Since it was a beautiful day Melanie put her suit on and staked out a spot by the pool; she was not going to miss her time in the sun. We stayed about four hours and it was a nice time. We enjoyed ourselves by making fun of the other people around the pool--because you know we look so much better. Eventually we decided to leave and start working our way to Savannah. Of course all three women wanted to stop at a **** store (I mean souvenir store) before we left Hilton Head.
Savannah is the oldest city in Georgia. It was founded in 1733 which makes it a youngster when compared to Charleston. It became an important port city in the south especially during the Revolutionary War and the Civil War. Today it is still a very busy port city, and it is the fourth largest port for shipping containers in the US. The city survived the Civil War virtually untouched when the city leaders met Union General Sherman on the outskirts as Sherman's army was doing its march to the sea. They negotiated the city's surrender and the Union army marched in the next morning without firing a shot. That means lots of historic homes for Robyn to try to visit, oh boy.
We got to Savannah late in the afternoon and after relaxing in the hotel for a bit we walked around awhile before heading to the river for dinner. We did stop at a downstairs tavern of a restaurant called The Olde Pink House. The name comes from the pink color of the building. Dinner was at a restaurant called the Boar's Head Tavern which looked right out on the river and we could watch the giant container ships coming and going. After dinner we walked up and down the river. There are quite a few restaurants and bars and since the evening was so pleasant a lot of people were out enjoying themselves. Tomorrow is our last day since we come home on Saturday; can't wait to see what is planned.
