We have been on the islands for almost 2 weeks now and as much as I love the relaxing routine of getting up early, doing a bit of work, having breakfast, going for a swim, relaxing by the pool, reading, more swimming, lunch, more relaxing, maybe bit of work and then dinner it is good to get out and do something. We booked ourselves on to a couple of trips, a day trip around the island and a day trip to the Ang Thong National Marine Park.
After a pretty harrowing ride on the back of a pick up trip to the meet up point we met our guide: Snake, he is Koh Phangan answer to Russell Brand. He was an infectious character with a lot of cheek and broken English.
On day trip 1 we visited the Chinese Temple on the island, it was interesting but have to say after seeing around a gazillion temples on my last trip and some of them were breath-taking I was a bit bored with this. Afterwards we were taken to Chakolum (Fisherman Village) were our long tail boat awaited. These boats look like they have come straight from the set of Mad Max, billowing smoke and making a deafening noise. All the same it was fun, we were taken around the headland to a popular snorkelling area. The snorkelling was great, lots of coral and many different kinds of fish. Next stop was the Eco Elephant Sanctuary were we all sat down to a buffet lunch and some people went for an Elephant ride, we opted out of this as we will get an opportunity later in the trip. We did get a chance to do a bit of Archery, out of 6 shots I hit the target once!!! First timer though :) Mark skills were similar. The day ended with a trip to one of the islands many waterfalls but as there had been no rain for a few days it was more of a waterless and wasn't too impressive. It was a good day trip but day trip 2 was miles better...
Day trip 2 was to Ang Thong Marine Park. Think Alex Garland, The Beach and you are here. The park is a group of islands west of Koh Phangan, it takes about 45 minutes in a speed boat to get there. The scenery is spectacular, massive rocky islands emerging from a turquoise sea.
We had the opportunity to visit various viewpoints and we kayaked for about an hour around them, we so wish that we had invested in a waterproof pouch for our phones so that we could have captured this. It was spectacular.
Other sightseeing on the day consisted of about 3, 6 foot Russian models, wearing the skimpiest bikinis we had ever seen, posing and pouting at every opportunity for their photographer boyfriends, all quite amusing.
It's our last day here at Sunset Cove, been amazing, but we are looking forward to the next part of our journey. Koh Tao awaits...
