Sorry for the long delay, but it's hard to get access to the internet in the Namibian desert. I'll have to do a rapid catch up, but so much has happened in the last 5 days, that I can barely remember what I did yesterday....well here goes!
My last day in Cape Town was spent 'Kloofing' as they call it in Africaans. In laymans terms this is basically gorge/cliff jumping. Absolute madness I know, but where else am I going to do these things.
And just to let you know Bunty, Berty and Gerty, my guides name was a man named Fanie - I asked him if he was connected to the Bottomley-Smythes, but alas no!
The day consisted of scrambling up through a rocky gorge to reach amazing rock pools and waterfalls. Even though the sun was blazing, the water was.. how shall I phrase it - Fresh, to say the least, somewhere around 8 degrees, enough to turn my toes blue anyway.
We reached the first rockpool, and the guide in his laid back blase style was like, yeah we just climb up there and jump off, it's only 10 metres - yikes! Has anyone ever stood on the edge of a rocky outcrop 10 metres over a small rock pool - pretty scarey believe me. While all the boys just climbed up and went for it, a trio of girls including myself stood there teetering on the edge trying to build up the courage. In the end I just took a deep breath and leapt. The shock of the water truly took my breath away, but after swallowing around 5 pints of freezing water, I limped over to the edge of the pool and pulled myself out triumphantly - I'd done it.
We then moved onto an amazing waterfall and not a person in sight, because the location was so remote and needed to be hiked up to. From here, one of the group did a spectacular jump from 24 metres - what a nutter! and the rest of us abseiled down the rockface into the freezing waters below, but what an adrenalin rush!!
Kloofing capers despite being stung by a dragon fly, and cured by naturally growing aloe vera, was definitely a highlight!
