DAY 1 - 5 AFRICAN OVERLAND TOUR
I've seen Springbok and Zebras, Vultures and Oryx, Ostriches and Kudu, and we haven't even been on safari yet! (of which I have now eaten ostrich springbok & kudu - very adventurous eh)
From the Cederberg Mountains to canoeing down the Orange River, this overland trip has been a non stop roller coaster so far. The down side, and I feel rude to complain is early morning wake up calls of 5am but generally a lie in until 6.30am, aagh!
However the things that we get to do more than makes up for the weary camp fire smoked eyes. Our tour group is great, a hearty mix of germans dutch and english. We so far have visited the mighty Fish River Canyon - arguably the 2nd biggest canyon in the world, and probably the best thing so far, climbed the famous Dune 45 and watched the sun rise - that's the big red sand dune that you see on all the postcards - a truly magical experience! We went to deadsvlei, an eerie desert scene with thousand year old dried out but perfectly formed trees in a spooky dried out oasis. And we've rolled and tumbled down 100m high sand dunes.
On reaching Swakupmond yesterday we leapt onto quad bikes and motored our way up and over more sand dunes, roller coastering our way around the Namibian desert. Later today however will be probably one of the most scarey things I've ever done, after taking my driving test..........I'm going sky diving aaagghh. Hoping I'll make it to the bottom unscathed, and live to tell the tale. Will try and tell you how it goes at my next internet opportunity.
TTFN!
