All too soon we're heading back into the cities and pollution central. This time it is Jaipur, also known as the ''Pink City', a shopping mecca, as well as famous for it's impressive palaces. We visit the Amber Palace, another testiment to the amazing architectual prowess of India. But it is here that I see the painted elephants traipsing tourists up & down the palace steps - oh no, soap box time; After seeing such majestic elephants wild in Africa, it's a hard pill to swallow, seeing these noble beasts trussed up & painted like a gaudy parody of what they should be. Too thin and probably underwatered - tourists have alot to answer for, in helping to perpetuate this kind of practice & exploitation. Ok soap box time-out, next stop Bolly Wood Movie.
The cinemas over here are like grand theatres, and going to a movie is a major event. Men and women have to queue in separate sex queues, and there is a woman - with a stick - to make sure everyone stays in line, and doesn't get to hyper. The cinema we went to was like an art deco shrine, and had a grand balcaony that overlooks the entrance area. Going to one of these movie's is like nothing I've ever been to. It's more like panto, the way all the indian people get involved. They shout and cheer and whistle and scream, it's such good fun!
The film we went to see was basically, Pretty Woman - indian style, complete with cheesy kitch songs, and even and indian rap (which did indeed inspire me to buy the soundtrack) - what more could you ask for from a movie. There were no subtitles, but to be fair, we really didn't need them, these films aren't exactly Francis Ford Koppola. I really want to go again, so hopefull my next film we be the smash hit 'Om Shanti Om' no telling now if anyone's already seen it, I don't want you to spoil it for me.
