Fraser Island!
The highlight of our trip so far, not just for the adventure, sights and scenary we experienced here, but for the amazing people we met. We became a little community, English, Canadians, Germans and Dutch, all at one with each other. You know when you meet a group of people and it feels like you have known them for years, when you have no inhabitions, you feel free to express yourself and do not fear being judged for it! That is the only way I can describe being in the company with these people. Especially the Canadians who are CRAZY!!! Imagine the guys from Jackass, mix them with descent genuine people and that's what we got!
We had a fantastic 3 day adventure camping on Fraser Island. From 4x4 Rallying, Me; AKA Nigel Mansell, bombing down the beach in a 4x4 truck with 6 passengers, going 80kmph, miles of beautiful sandy beach stretched before me, waves crashing down beside us, masses of greenary around us! ah bisto!
We took the ferry over to the island then lock on the 4 wheel drive and we were off; just to get to the first destination was quite some veet. Wendy was our chef driver, steering us through the bumpy terrain and soft sand trenches. It was all part of the experience getting stuck, digging our way, flying through the air as the truck slammed over each bump!
The island is simply stunning, we made our way through what seemed like an endless forest only to arrive at the most beautiful lake I have even seen. The clearest aqua blue water caressed the shore, before gradually turning the deepest blue as the depth of the water increased. It was bizarre to bath in water was so fresh, it tasted good enough to drink, so used to salty sea water! But then again I was with about 30 party animals some of whom had already started on the goon, so second thoughts on drinking the water.
We camped out beside the ocean, nothing better than chilling by a campfire, next to the sea, with a mug of goon and the best of company! Back to nature, the only thing to worry about was where you were going to wee and what might be watching you! Dingos were on the scavange never more than a few meters away! One night me and Wendy went a toilet and a Dingo followed us back, it was stratching through the tent at Wendy's head. We also saw a large snake slivering along the beach; not what you want to be sharing a tent with! But after a few mugs or should I say litres of goon, I think the Dingos were scared off, as we became the wild life! It was certainly a messy time, once you startmixing red and white wine what do you expect! It was too much for one of the Canadians who lets just say, his stomach contents decided it wanted to sleep in his tent! Nice...and guess where he ended up...yeap sleeping it off in our tent!
On the 2nd day we went to Indian Head lookout (wow incredible panaramic views of the island) and Lake Wabby; 1km walk through the forest which cleared into a Sand Blow; a large mass of sand raised high above the ground. It was like walking out into the Sarhara; crazy huge sand dunes, leading down to a fresh lake teaming with Catfish...so bizarre!
Wild times, we loved every minute of it!
