Ah Byron Bay, the closest I'll ever get to the 60's. It's easy to lose all track of time here; especially after a trip to Nimbim!
We are staying in the Arts Factory Hoatel; originally used as a hippy commune! This place is COOL! I have been sleeping in a giant TEEPEE making friends with the spiders, croaches, lizards and turkeys; yes TURKEYS! Love it here, peacful, chilled, slow, a place where everyone says hi and everyone is HIGH!
The building may have all the modern facilities but manages to retain to it's hippy vibe, with huts mounted over swamp lands, surrounded by forest, teepees, old double decker buses, hammocks, bongo lesson and digeridoo making. Every night at 6pm the sky turns black as the resident bats cover the sky, an amazing sight when your swinging in a hammock with a lizard by your side!
Byron itself is a small seaside town with remindance of the 60s, but if you want to fully experience the 60s culture then NIMBIM is the place. We took a trip out and let's just say its the place to go if you want a different type of TRIP! The town became overrun with hippies back in the 60s after 100's of hippies decided to stay and live an alternative lifestyle after a town festival 'Aquarius'; with no easy access to hot water or electricity they went back to nature and used the earth food and its 'magical herbs' to live. Now its a tourist attractions swamped with red eyed backbackers with the remainder of cookie crumbs in the crease of their mouths!
Of course it would be rude not to indulge in their cultural delights he he! We had a fab time here, lots of belly laughter, giggling and chilling, we finished the day by jumping off a waterfall hidden of track; very refreshing! We were joined by Wendy's friends and boyfriend from Sydney who came up for the weekend.
I loved my time in Byron, Pete was more than ready to go; oh I forgot to tell you the story about the SPIDER. Well let's just say when Pete went to bed one night he had an unwanted guest waiting for him on his pillow; dum dum dum; a big HUNTSMAN spider arrgghh, it scurried away between his matress and headboard waiting to pounce. Subsequently he didn't get much sleep that night, he slept on the hostel couch til 5; whilst everyone partied around him. Me on the other hand braved it in the bed opposite, with my hoodie covering my face and sheet tucked around me in the hop that no criters could get in! I quite enjoyed being that close to nature, I think I could have easily spent a few more days chilling in the hammocks with a good book in the day and a case of GOON by my side in the evening!
