SAN DIEGO - 08.09.09 - 10.09.09 (Days 16 - 18)
Stayed in Pacific Beach for 2 nights.
SURFING - Me and Pete tried our hand at SURFING!!!! oh lord, Pete was not quite the expert he thought he would be and well me; lets just say I did not take to it like a fish to water...just laying on the board was a challenge! The boards were so heavy, it was difficult to even carry them, and trust me you do not want to get hit by one of them. By the end of the day we were both battered and bruised, after being hit in the jaw by a 6ft long board it was time to call it a day. But we both threw ourselves into it and soon found ourselves craving more realising the buzz that lures you into the surfing world!
Pete caught an awesome wave and I well, did manage to half stand and then stand and ride a wave for about 1.5 seconds which trust me is an achievement. Pete managed to stand up a bit more than me, but it was more like standing up and falling down again than riding any waves!
Although the Ocean was rough and unpredictable I found a strange inner calm and peace being out on the Ocean, I felt no longer scared as the waves crashed down before me, no longer fearful of what might lie beneath the surface. I felt pure tranquility!
Our aim was to have a few quiet nights but it did not work out that way. Meet some really cool people Jesse (musician) Drew (Kiwi) some good conversations that of course had to be complimented by liquor!
It took us a while to really understand San Diego, there are so many layers to it. Downtown area gives of the vibe of a suburan city, with sky skrapers, airport, port with huge ferry's and war ships! It did not feel condensed or overcrowded, more like a laid back spacious city! Very strange!
