Sat 28.08.09 - Day 6 - THE BIG SUR
This has to be the best part of the road trip so far! We drove from Montary, through to Carmel (17 mile drive). Wow the most amazing views to the right, and to the left immaculate gold courses used by the rich and famous, with huge houses surrounding them. The golf courses had wild dear roaming free. We then hit the BIG SUR! Jaw dropping views of the ocean. In our convertible our car caressed the winding narrow mountainous roads, stunning views round every turn. Cliff edges dropping to sandy shores to the right and mountain ranges stretching as far as the eye can see to the left! Incredible. Would recommend this drive to anyone!
In fact we got so snap happy with the camera, stopping at nearly every turn, that we did not arrive to the most northern point until the sun was setting. We tried to find a lodge, motel, but all the inns were full, the only one that had vacancys were the Post Inn ($845 a night) apparently one of the most hotels in the world; just a bit over our budget!!!! ahhh now dark nowhere to stay, the next town was not for over an hour and we did not want to miss the rest of the big sur by driving through the dark and on the dangerous narrow winding roads.
So yes, you guess it we spent the night in the car, but it has got to be one of the most memorable, incredible experiences. We found a clearing by a cliff edge, and with the roof down, we lay on top of the car, chilling under the stars, listening to music and watching the beauty of the night sky, the ocean, moon and stars, surrounded by mountains, sheer drops. Breath taking!!!
However the memory of that moment will last a life time but the feeling of pure contentment only lasted until we tried to sleep! Pete thought the hills might have eyes, and some hill billy might come and try and chop us into pieces, so we tried to sleep with the roof up! It was 80 degrees at midnight, in a stuffy little convertible with no air, uncomfortable chairs it was not good! We didn't get any sleep that night, but was up at 4:00am watching the moon set over the ocean incredible bright orange colour! Wow.
Wow - It was like something out of a movie!!!
