Time has sure flown by. It doesn't seem like two weeks is coming to an end but the day after tomorrow we leave for the States… and from what I have been hearing, not much better weather. I love it here, the wide variety of people, shops, activities, foods… but am looking forward for a reprieve from the combination of heat and humidity.
Aside from walking, which we did a lot of, we have ridden street trolleys, trains, subways, double deck busses, the Peak tram, Star ferry, taxi, and a sampan. I guess the only thing we haven't ridden is in a rickshaw, but I haven't seen any of those on this trip. In the sixties they were still common transportation. When I was here in the early 80's they were still being used but only in certain areas, a year and a half ago, there were a handful being used for photo ops on the Central side of Star ferry pier, but I haven't seen one this time.
Thursday we were all so tired that we slept late and waited to the afternoon to start our venture, letting the midday heat and sun pass. We first went to the Noah's Ark Park on Ma Wan Island and then more shopping in Tsim Sha Tsui. We finished the day at a famous Australian pub called Ned Kelly's Last Stand. They have some of the best meat pie you will ever eat, and a great jazz band, that will rival anything you have heard in New Orleans.
Traveling with us most of this time was a friend of the family from Verwood England, Nan. (for those who know Nikki, it is her grandmother) We were delighted to hear that she had accepted our invitation to join us here, but had concerns as she had fallen and broken her foot a couple years ago, and when you are 80 years old, that can be a reason for concern. In Hong Kong there is a LOT of walking… mostly up and down stairs and steep streets as the entire area's geography consist of mountains. She, however, would push and shove like the rest of us in the rush hour crowds and stayed close by, and we never had to wait for her, but sometimes she had to pause and wait for me to catch up J.
Yesterday I went with Nan to see her off at the airport, about an hour's journey from where we are staying. She had to be at the airport by 6AM for her flight back to the UK. Yesterday afternoon Marge, Noel, and I went to some historic sites here in Fanling New Territories and then traveled to Sha Tin MTR Mall and ate at a Ruby Tuesdays. Ummmmmmm that hamburger was soooo good. Noel bought some new shoes, and for the most part we just didn't push to do or go much. We just wanted to take it easy and rest.
Today is going to be real busy. I am going to a couple malls, and then visit the Chinese University in Sha Tin and also UHK on Hong Kong Island side. Marge and Noel will meet me at UHK, them we will go back to Stanley Market for some last minuet shopping, and then end late tonight on Temple Street. I hope to do all the "going" that there is left to do today so after church tomorrow we all can rest and pack for Monday morning's flight home.
Home…. Ahhh that has a nice sound to it!
