No. It wasn't just rain last night. It was a full blown thunderstorm lasting two hours so not a comfortable nights sleep where it's hot and sticky and thundering and lighting. Oh well. Wake up refreshed then walk down the long street again. Obviously it's stopped raining but it's murky outside. Had a continental breakfast. Croissant and juice and anything else I can have. Lots of places offer these for good price.
Got the the river seine again and its starting to rain so bought an umbrella (word of advice this is a good investment). Went to the Notre dame cathedral and outside there was a charity worker asking for money. Thought nothing of it. Gave a couple of euro's. Then later on in France they are everywhere for the same charity harassing you. Umbrella comes is useful to get rid of them. Anyway I went inside the cathedral. Tried to use those tourist guide gadgets for foreigners (am now classed as a foreigner). To be honest these gadgets I found annoying.it hangs around your neck then you where headphones and everywhere you go you have to type in a number to get the story behind the area you are visiting. As a lone traveller I like doing things at my pace so this gadget was to slow and annoying for me. So I admired every part of the cathedral especially the inscriptions along the middle depicting the story of Christ ( am not a very religious person but am intrigued ). There was a service on going so obviously had to be quiet. I lit a few candles in the cathedral after a donation. Truly a magnificent place to visit. I tried to do the tower climb but was busy. Word of advice. Get the very early. You go up in groups of eight people for set time. If I had more time in Paris I might have done it but as today was only whole day I didn't want to wait round in queues.
So I walked along the seine towards the louvre museum after I crossed the bridge. It was closed. Remember museums close on Tuesdays. So I took more photos of the famous pyramid glass structure of the museum. Then walked towards the arc de triumphe. It was a long walk but worth it admiring the views and buildings. Although it was murky and raining off and on I still wanted to make the most of the day. Around the arc de triumphe was the famous roundabout that had at least ten roads leading onto it so a huge roundabout. Luckily we have underpasses to get to the arc de triumphe.
This was another extraordinary structure. Well worth the visit particularly visiting inside it and exploring the history and construction. Word of caution. Wear a decent pair of walking shoes and make sure you love climbing as there was at least ten flights of stairs to get to the top. Knackered was an understatement.
Once I finished this bit I obviously took photo and went near the tomb of the unknown soldier. Candles poignantly flickering in the rain. Then I walked through underpass to have lunch and drink with the view of the arc de triumphe literally across the street.
Afterwards I decided to stroll around some more towards the victor Hugo. He off course is the writer of les miserables and hatchback of Notre dam. Have to confess never read those novels but seen the les miserable on stage and DVD. Magnificent. Anyway I digress. So it started to rain again and museums were shut so with my umbrella in one hand and map in another I wandered around Paris taking in the brainstormed sights. The eiffel tower half exposed due to cloud. Walked around a few parks which have sand and gravel. Annoying if you are wearing ankle socks and trainers and the sand gets into your socks and you spend half the day emptying the contents out ( annoys the restaurant owners too but never mind). Anyway I digress again.
Back over the river seine after gift shopping for myself and family I reach the famous Paris opera house (think that's what it is called). Took more photos then headed towards Moulin rouge as heard so much about it. Found a nice restaurant as it started to Chuck it down now. Not much views to enjoy so thought I would relax. Then I saw a pedestrian getting run over by a cyclist. Never a dull moment on my travels. Both of them were ok. I was going to help but by the time I got up they dusted each other off then shook hands and went about there business.
Finished a lovely meal (forgot what it was but was nice). Had a few bottles of cider. Staggering back to hotel was an experience but I made it. Took more photos of the Moulin rouge. Would love to have seen a show there but maybe next Time i am in Paris. Am on a budget like most travellers. As a whole I loved Paris and would love to visit it again (except on a Tuesday where everywhere is shut). Back to hotel for a good night's sleep I hope then the next day I travel to Brussels.
