My journey begins at kings cross st Pancras station. Am awaiting the eurostar train. The very first time I have ever been on eurostar and what an amazing experience it was. I began the journey with my decent rucksack and trolley holdall. Was always worried about my luggage going on trains and storing them like any traveller would be.
Camera at the ready taking random photos. Then on the train and it is heaving. Full of people doing there own various trips, adventures, business trips. Each one has an interesting story to share. My story is about to begin.
Arriving at Paris gare du nord station am I am already staggered by it. A huge station with around 30platform's. Weather was beautiful and hot. In this iron clad building it felt much hotter. First thing I get is a bottle of water but now the first experience. Buying something in a language I rarely used. Luckily the bloke wasn't bothered. I said bonjour and merci so left on good terms.
Now to find the hotel using a map. Not using my phone as don't want to fall into trap of using roaming abroad. Found a nice hotel but it was the wrong one that I booked. Doh. Luckily the man behind the desk pointed me right direction. As I arrived at right hotel it was the lift that amazed me. It was such a small lift only two people could fit in it so I squeezed in as hard as I could with my ruck sack and holdall and made it to top floor. The room was very small but I only wanted a room to sleep in nothing else. What made me laugh was the floor. It wasn't level. I took a photo of the skirting board to show the enormity of the angel. Let's put it this way. If you left a ball on one side of room it went the other way fast.
So now I am ready to walk in Paris. Every single street and alley has traffic lights. Very safe but you get bad looks if you Jay walk. I walk down the long street and arrive at bridge over the river seine. Taking photos along the way off course. Beautiful river and architecture. Across the way I see the Notre dame cathedral. Obviously I headed towards it and admired its gothic features and incredible design. I wanted to climb to top of tower but was huge queue. The weather was getting stormy so I managed to walk around and found a lovely restaurant with outside (covered) seats and ordered food and cider (in English as they had English menus). Once the storm passed I walked around more and headed towards the musee de l'armee. It was closed but I walked round and found the Eiffel tower. What an extraordinary feature it is. Luckily the weather improved and I decided to go up it. Worth the wait. You have to get one lift to the second level then the other lift to the top. Each one had a massive queue obviously but each level got some amazing views. Also saw the history of the tower dotted round it too. Finally got to the top. And this more than met my expectations. Looking down on a city that has experienced revolutions and invasions and inspired many artists and poets alike.
Once I finished the Eiffel tower it was getting late so I decided to take a stroll along the river seine. Everywhere I looked there were views and bridges that took my breath away. Even found the bridge the has love padlocks all over it. Don't know when the craze started but it was something different. I saw many museums along the way that I wanted to see the day after ( forget that most museums close on Tuesdays). Walked back to the hotel for a good night's sleep in Paris, then it started to rain and my room is right at the top of the hotel, wonder if the rain will last all night.............
