Blenheim is in the Marlborough Valley and is well known for its Marlborough wines, particularly their Sauvignon Blanc. We decided to join a wine tour, which was great as there were only 5 of us. There are around 400 vineyards in the Marlborough area and over 80 wineries, of which we visited 9. The area specialises in boutique, top-end wines and the industry in this area has been going for around 30 years. The wines are getting so popular now that the French have begun to buy up many of the wineries! We visited Drylands, St Clair, Hunters, Allan Scott, The Mud House, Wairau River, Seresin, Forrest Estate and Cloudy Bay, sampling 62 wines!! The main varieties were Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Riesling, Gewurtztraminer, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir and Merlot with the odd dessert wine and Rose thrown in for good measure! We also tried some liqueurs, a beer, olive oils and chocolate! So basically a day of heaven! That night we met up with James, from our wine tour, at his hostel, to carry on sampling the wines of the day!
