Woke up to rain...awesome but that it what they invented raincoats for. So after a surprisingly delicious breakfast we headed out.
First stop was to tour around the worst of the hurricane katrina area. This was a real eye opener. A lot of the area is still not repaired and shows the markings to indicate deaths. It was a real somber experience with us feeling quite sad leaving. Some of the houses that have people living in them don't look habitable but I suppose there aren't many options.
So after taking the long way back to the hotel ( apparently it is not Paul's driving it is the gps hmmmm) we dropped Linda and Mitch off at the hotel.
Paul, Jacob and I headed off to go on an airboat tour on the Louisiana swamp.
Must admit I was a bit nervous about getting on an air boat but once we started it was pretty awesome. We toured around the swamp looking for gators and we found one which was rare for this time of year.
Our guide was a local guy that had the best personality and knew everything there is to know about gators. We pulled over into an area to stop and we had question time so we talked about everything including his life in louisiana. Then.......he produced a gator. I near let off the boat but I was convinced into holding it, surprisingly soft and thankfully didn't bite. Then our guide thought it would be funny to explain what a " Cajun hold up " , basically thrusting the gator at my face holding it as a gun. There may have been some slight hysteria on my behalf and it is a miracle I didn't fall into the swamp.
Thankfully we returned to dock before it rained as the sky was turning a bit black.
What do you need at the end of a swamp day....Cajun food. We had gumbo, shrimp, catfish, blackened chicken and crawfish. All a bit spicey for me but the seafood was really yummy. So now ready to go in to a food coma but finishing getting ready to head to NY tomorrow. We are going with all the turmoil with protests and 2 cops were killed yesterday as a consequence of protesting. Though it happens everywhere....this morning at breakfast we saw on the news that less than 3 hrs after we left bourbon street someone was shot. Such a happy place to visit :)
