Christmas Eve!!!
It was really great to be in the middle of nowhere on Christmas Eve, really it was. Now, family, do forgive us as you know we love you dearly, but being away from all of the Christmas shennanigans and ridiculous over-indulging is something El and I will always want to do!
So, what is Spizkoppe? Well, Spizkoppe itself is one of Namibia's best known landmarks and 2nd highest mountain, and if I tell you it stands at a mere 1728 metres you can appreciate how flat the country is. The area is a series of rock formations and is beautiful. But hot. Very bloody hot.
El and I found a secluded little spot to pitch our tent - up on one of the rock formations we found a flat gravel section and promptly claimed that as ours for the night! Not at all put off by the fact that the snakes make their way up onto the rocks at night....well, not quite put off, but definitley unnerved enough to check the tent and sleeping bags thoroughly before going to bed!!
A few of us took a bottle of red wine (or 2) up to a perfect little spot on the rocks to watch the sunset. We had a little drink to everyone back home and quickly followed it with a drink to Africa and it's amazing sunsets. With the sun firmly set we gingerly made our way back down, ate dinner and then retired to bed.
Christmas Day saw us all wake up with the sunrise and wow - this was the 2nd best place we have ever woken up on Christmas Day....the first being Cinsta Bay in 2004 of course! It is official....every other year or so will see us away in the middle of nowhere over the festive season!
Christmas Day itself was nothing to write home about. We arrived in Swakupmond, discovered the only accomodation available was bunkbeds in a dorm, ate a rather shoddy dinner, went for a drink in a bar full of twenty-somethings on the pull, made a quick exit and headed to our dorm and sleep before 10pm!! How old we are getting, how old!
