Swakupmund - a few days to chill before setting off on our own road trip and 2.5 weeks of travel on our own.
26th - a lie in!! A lie in and a chance to catch up on journal writing etc. We may have been in a dorm last night, but don't feel too sorry for us as we did know the people we were sharing with, afterall we had been travelling with them for the past 14 days!
El and I got up in the afternoon and after booking quad biking for the following morning, had a little wander around Swakop, we thought we'd better get our bearings as this was home for the next 2 nights.
Swakopmund is a strange little town. Very Germanic in style, the majority of buildings are single-storey and chocolate box colours. It was a really easy town to get your head around and being in civillisation we were salivating at the thought of being able to eat in restuarants and eat in restuarnts we did - lots of DELICIOUS food.....
Wandering round Swakop made us think a little about Sth Africa, and our impressions of Cape Town 2 years ago. In SA, the segregation between blacks and whites is still evident, afterall it is only 12 years since apartheid, and things are going to take time to work themselves out. In Namibia, given the long years of conflict, the bitterness of the liberation war, and the legacy of racism and ethnic politics, it has made a remarkable transition to domestic peace, and having gained independence from SA in 1990, it has had longer to work on equality. And that extra time is evident. There are still townships on the outskirts of all big towns, but there are the jobs available and some great housing projects on the go that mean you don't such a huge divide between white and blacks.
11am on the 27th saw us aboard quad bikes and racing through the dunes. Awesome! Some hair raising moments though! 1pm on the 27th saw us checking into The Stiltz....WOW. This place was amazing, our room was utter luxury after 3 weeks of tents, treehouses and dorms...
2 days of staying in a town and we were getting itchy feet - we were dying to get back out into the wilderness, so we booked a trip down to Sandwich Bay for the following day...which meant another early night in preparation for another early start...but this time with very little sleep as my stomach growled and churned in revenge for the the volume of rich food and drink I had consumed...steak, champagne and red wine....nice at the time but jolly painful at 4am in the morning! Naturally, El didn't have any problems sleeping.
