Beth demanded that we again visit the beach on Sunday so we rented some bikes from our hostel and headed back to the beach. We had a leisurely few hours at the beach where Beth caught some rays and I listened to some music in the shade as it was again super hot. We headed out on Sunday night to a sports bar I had scouted out so that we could watch some of the premier league football. We sunk a good few drinks and I think Beth even enjoyed sitting for a few hours watching the football.
On Monday, we went back to the old quarter to visit a few more of the sites. We first went to the Tran Family Chapel which was built hundreds of years ago by the Tran family to worship their ancestors. It was interesting, although not very big, but the tour guide was determined to sell us some souvenirs which we obviously had no interest in. She was pretty persistent and looked pretty unimpressed that we didn't end up buying anything. We then went to the Phuc Kien Assembly hall. The building was really impressive and well decorated and we enjoyed a bit of time walking around. We then grabbed a late lunch before retreating from the sun again and doing a bit of shopping. We grabbed a pizza for tea on Monday night in a good Italian restaurant before having a quiet night.
Tuesday was dedicated shopping day. There are loads of items on sale in Hoi An and I'm sure you can literally buy almost anything. We settled on a few souvenirs and presents for home and again posted some stuff home so our bags are now a lot lighter. I'm sure this will only last until Thailand where Beth intends to fill my bag up again!!! On Tuesday night, we had tea where Beth ordered a salad with no peanuts only for her to start eating and find a load of them buried in the salad. Good job she doesn't have a peanut allergy and just dislikes them!!! They brought her another one and profusely apologised so she was moderately happy. We then went to a bar for a drink where Beth had a strawberry daiquiri and practically shot it whilst I somehow managed to get San Miguel on tap. Not sure how you get a Spanish lager on tap in Vietnam but it was good.
We again went to the beach on Wednesday where they made us pay for sunbeds this time. Previously as long as you buy a drink or food then try give you the beds for free (we learned this after paying on the first day). However, they refused due to it being a public holiday in Vietnam so we had to pay. I was so irate that we refused to buy dinner there so we spent a lot less than we would have. I was starving though and my stomach was rumbling so principles aren't the best thing!! After returning from the beach, it started raining and it's been so long since its rained that we wondered what this strange liquid was that was falling from the sky. It stopped in time to not get wet when we went out so we grabbed some food at a cafe. I ordered a spicy tomato pasta dish and what came was blatantly a creamy sort of carbonara dish with no sign of it being tomato. When we quizzed the owner, he did try to argue that it was the dish I had ordered before seeing that this was an argument he couldn't possibly win and ordering me the correct dish. I genuinely believe he would have argued that it was tomato even though it was white if we hadn't of been so stubborn. The food was good none the less.
I'm currently writing this as we wait for our bus to Nha Trang. We are slightly nervous as our last long bus journey was a nightmare. This journey should be about 12 hours but we are already off to a bad start as the guy on reception advised us earlier that instead of being picked up at 5.30pm, we will now be picked up at 7.00pm for reasons which we believe are traffic related.
