On Wednesday morning, we visited the cathedral which is on Plaza de Armas in the centre of Arequipa. We went on a guided tour and the guide was very informative and the cathedral was very impressive as it has been rebuilt several times us to the massive earthquakes which the area is prone to every hundred years or so. The view from the roof was also excellent of the whole city and the surrounding volcanoes.
After the visit to the cathedral, we went to find a bar as I was looking to catch the match. As we were looking for a bar, we bumped into a barman who said he would open up at 2 and put the game on. We said deal. So we headed to the bar and there was the barman sitting with a beer waiting for us. I ordered a beer and Beth a Cuba libre and then the barman decided to give us free shots and a free cocktail for Beth. We were happy until the game kicked off and Newcastle were rubbish. The barman was pretty eccentric and seemed to be enjoying the drink more than us but we had a canny afternoon despite the result. After the match, we grabbed a pizza then a few drinks from the supermarket and had a few more drinks in the room.
On Thursday morning, we decided to check out the Santa Catalina monastery. The monastery was built in the 1600's and is like a city within the city. It was absolutely huge and everything within the monastery dated from the 1800s or earlier. We had a good walk around for about two and a half hours. It's definitely worth a visit if anyone is in the vicinity.
On Thursday night, we ventured out for one last look around the city and grabbed a ridiculously cheap tea!! So now it's off to Chile after more than a month in Peru and its just over a week till we are off to New Zealand.
