We arrived in Arequipa at about 7.30am after a 12 hour journey from Huacachina. The journey wasn't the greatest given that Beth had chosen the seats next to the toilets at the back of the bus and people were constantly brushing past us all night. We had chosen the budget option as well so we had less leg room and our seats weren't very comfortable so all in all we hardly got any sleep.
We jumped in a taxi which got us through the rush hour Arequipa traffic to our hostel. We were desperate to get into our room so we could get some sleep but unfortunately our room wasn't ready so we had to wait around whilst fighting off thoughts of getting to sleep. We eventually got into the room at around 10am and quickly hit the sack. After waking up and having quick showers, we went for a walk around Arequipa to try and work out where everything was. The centre is pretty compact so it was easy to walk around and try to find museums and other interesting places. For tea, we found a pizza place and grabbed a huge takeaway pizza and took it back to our room. It was bellissimo.
After having breakfast on Tuesday morning, we decided to walk to Mirador de Yanahuara which provides views to the volcanoes which surround the city of Arequipa. Unfortunately, it was a little bit hazy but we did manage to see the volcanoes. We then walked to the San Camilo market and had a good look around. It was interesting but the sights of the heads and legs of animals in the market was a bit off putting. We couldn't even work out what the heads were but they looked like deer heads and the legs looked like cow legs. Why you would buy these we aren't even sure!!
Next came the most nervous moment of our travels yet!! I had decided that I had to get a haircut as it was 13 weeks since I had a haircut and I was resembling some kind furball. We found a hairdressers and I ventured in sheepishly. After waiting for her to finish her current customer I nervously sat on the chair and tried to communicate what I was looking for through an old photograph. After she enquired a couple of times as to whether my hair was clean (I was slightly offended!!) she started to cut and there was no going back. It came out okay and I didn't end up with a skinhead so I was happy.
Tonight, we are having another wild night and have got a cooked chicken from the supermarket for tea an are just chilling in our hostel.
