Our last couple of days in Santiago have been pretty relaxed. We have spent the days wandering around the city and relaxing in the apartment. It's been really good to have our own apartment where we have been able to cook our own food and relax at night. Beth has felt slightly ill today so we've taken it easy to make sure she is okay for our flight to New Zealand tomorrow. The weather here over the past 3 days has been absolutely beautiful and boiling hot. This has made sleeping a bit tricky but Beth's still managed it no problem.
So this is our last night in South America after almost 14 weeks of travelling from Rio to Santiago and from the Atlantic to the Pacific. It's quite hard to pick out highlights as to be honest almost every day has included seeing or doing something which seems slightly surreal or amazing. I would have to say the Inca Trail and Salt Flats trips were fantastic an we have hopefully met some friends for life on these. Iguassu Falls was in the first week of our trip but has to be one of the most breathtaking sites of the trip and then there have been the beaches of both Copacabana and Mancora which have provided a bit of relaxation amongst the chaos of life in South America. The mammoth bus journeys have been a necessary feature of travelling in South America and have probably not been as bad as we envisaged before we left the UK. Nothing ever seems to run very smoothly with buses in South America, whether this be roadblocks, landslides or problems with the bus. The 33 hour journey from Cusco to Lima particularly stands out!!
Surprisingly, our lack of Spanish has not hindered our travels in South America. Obviously, life would have been a lot easier with a better grasp of the language but we have managed to get by with a mix of English and very basic Spanish and we have always been able to eventually understand or get our point across.
All in all, South America has been an amazing experience and much better than we could ever have imagined. We have throughout enjoyed every second of travelling here (maybe with the exception of a couple of ill days in La Paz) and some of the things we have seen have been fantastic. We are looking forward to getting to New Zealand for the next leg of our trip and jumping to 13 hours ahead of everyone back in the UK.
