We arrived in La Serena at around 9.30am on Monday morning. After leaving Arica at 10.30am on Sunday morning, this was 23 hours on the bus. The bus journey was pretty good as the buses were really comfortable and there was hardly anyone on the bus. We had to change buses in Antofagasta at around 9pm on Sunday night and Beth managed to sleep pretty much all the way to La Serena. The bus company we used was Tur Bus, who seem to be the largest in Chile, and their buses have been excellent so far.
We managed to walk to our hostel from the bus station as it wasn't too far and our first impressions of the hostel were pretty good. The outdoor area is really nice with plenty of seats and we have use of a pretty good shared kitchen so we can cook our food. After having a quick nap in the hostel, we went to the bus station to book our tickets to Santiago on Wednesday. After sorting our tickets out, we had a quick look around the shopping mall which is here then went to the supermarket to buy some supplies for tea. Here, we discovered that red wine is nearly as cheap in Chile as Argentina. We decided to give a bottle a try purely to
compare it to the Argentinian tipples we tried earlier in the trip.
This evening we have had a walk down to the beach. The weather has been fantastic all day and the breeze at the beach helped to cool us down. After coming back to the hostel, we've had some homemade spaghetti bolognese for tea followed by some red wine for me and some Bacardi for Beth. Not bad or a Monday night!!
