Our final night in Puerto Iguazu was spent at one of the restaurants in town as a treat for our frugal spending in the past couple of days. The hostel owner gave us a voucher so we could get two free caipirinhas at a certain restaurant so we headed there. As we are till on a budget, we shared a pizza and some chips and it was delicious. The most amazing thing about the meal was the treatment of a bottle of quilmes (lager) as if it were a bottle of wine. The waitress came over with a stand and ice bucket and served it to each of us as if it were the finest red they had. I nearly swilled it around in my mouth and spat it back in to the glass but I think this would have been going too far.
We left Puerto Iguazu at 2pm on Thursday afternoon on the 17 hour journey to Buenos Aires. We thought it would be relatively straight forward but how wrong we were. We were promised by the liar who sold us the tickets that we would definitely not have to change buses - we actually changed buses twice!! We were promised the very best service & free refreshments but these did not materialise until we changed buses for the second time which was over 5 hours into the journey. Finally we were promised wifi but this never happened at all. A lesson learned is to never use Rio Uruguay for a bus in South America! To be fair when we got on the third bus after 5 hours of travelling the service was excellent with a waitress serving food and drink and our own tv so we could pick which ever films we wanted. I watched Lincoln and Zero Dark Thirty whilst Beth watched the back of her eyelids. She likes doing that whenever we travel.
Whilst on the bus, I'm reliably informed by Beth that police came onto the bus at about 5 o clock and started searching people. I was fast asleep at this point while Beth somehow managed to wake up but played dead when the police officer came close!!
Finally, we arrived in Buenos Aires at around half 8 this morning. After getting our bags, a first taxi driver tried to rip us off by offering to take us to our apartment or 130 pesos. The owner had advised us that it should be no more than 40 pesos. After politely running away, we got into another taxi who started the meter and advised it (we think) that it wasn't far. However when getting out of the taxi he wanted another 10 pesos on top of the fare for lifting our bags out of the car. We gave him about 2 pesos as he looked like a bit of a street fighter and I wouldn't want Beth to have to kick his head in!!
We are now in the apartment we booked as a treat and it's cracking. It's much better to have a bit of our own space for a week before we return to life in a dorm. We've even been able to get plenty of food in without the fear of it being stolen from the fridge. Meat, particularly steak, beer and wine seems to be dirt cheap here. Sounds like a good diet to me. We think we will crack open our £1.30 bottle of red tonight. Hopefully it's good and we can live off that for the next 4 weeks in Argentina!
