Heading to LA
As the LA plane was flying out of Melbourne early we decided to fly to Melbourne from Canberra the night before. We had booked an upgrade to business class using frequent flyer points but they advised they wont allocate until 5 hours before the flight. We found out at 7pm that we had been upgraded. I really don't look forward to the cattle class on long haul flights even though the A380 is better for room than the 747, so was very pleased with the upgrade. Once into the hotel room near the airport I thought I would check my email and continue some games of "words with friends", Vodafone had different ideas, had all bars and 3G signal but no internet access at all. It was a worse experience with vodafone than I have had in Sydney or Canberra and those were bad. Oh well thank god for the Qantas Club.
After boarding (second row top deck window seat) we were handed a champagne before take off ( 9am). as soon as we had taken off and reached cruising altitude out came the drinks. The wine was Clonakilla Shiraz which is a very nice Canberra area wine. Lunch for us was red curry snapper with rice and a lovely roast chicken with preserved lemon, date and almond stuffing with sautéed potatoes and zucchinis. Dessert was creme brûlée followed by a muscat and cognac.
Lunch over, we proceeded to down a few more Clonakilla's, watch a few recent movies then get some sleep in the seats that lay down flat like a bed.
I actually got more sleep than I ever have on a long haul flight so was sort of ok arriving in LAX. Then we hit the Customs area. 1.5 hours later (1 hour in line at the passport check) we were out of the street and on the avis shuttle bus. We originally settled on a luxury cadillac but when we got there realised we would have trouble with luggage for 3 adults, they upgraded us to a Jeep Grand Cheroke Larado, nice vehicle. Picking up Karens mom at 4pm with the intention of heading to Cabazon Premium Outlets. It took Eileen 3 hours to clear customs and here bag was lost between Heathrow and LA. Ended up staying at Westin overnight and her bag was delivered late that night
