This turned out to be a random but successful say of exploring. We saw on our fold out map that there was a meteor crater on the outskirts of Odessa which we felt needed exploring. It wasn't quite the deep crater I had in mind (that's what comes from 1000s of years of dirt filling it in apparently) but the diameter of it was impressive, as were the parts you could see had folded back on themselves as the impact had hit limestone. We were warned to stay on the path as there were snakes in the grass, which made for some excellent winding up of Donna.
We then carries on the road towards San Antonio, but again our interest was caught by something on the map. Caves!! The Caverns of Sonora to be precise, which sounded so tantalising Lord of the Rings we had to investigate! We were given a tour with a very enthusiastic dye tie t-shirt wearing tour guide who was very informative. It is one of the beat show caves in the world and is one of the few accessible caves which is still growing. Here were the usual stalagmites and staligtites which were beautiful in their own right but the helictites are world famous in the caving community (appaz) and were stunning. We also played a game in the dark (not as creepy as it sounds), she turned off all the lights and it was the purest darkness I've experienced. She got us to wave our hands in front of our faces and a trick llayed on the brain makes you think you can see it moving in the dark. Crazy brain.
After just under two hours in the caverns we headed back up above ground and drove on to San Antonio, found a motel just outside the city and chilled out after our day of geography exploration.
