I'm a bit behind but wanted to get some thoughts about today down. First day at Grace House and I went down to arrange a tuk tuk to take me to find the Canadian little old ex head who is leaving tomorrow and whose place I will be taking. She has been here for 5 months and was such a help to me today. First she has a driver -banyan who has been her driver and who will do the same for me every day most people cycle but it is a long way in the heat and on dreadful roads. I watched her with the class -she had 2 lessons on a first aid topic classes are repeated in the afternoon with different children. The class teacher she assured me was the best and he was very sweet. The kids are so keen and ready to learn. They had an hour of computers - same as at home but they were actually using the English language websites. Lunch is 2 hours and everyone ate together in school so saw the whole group of volunteers the because it was Marylins last day we all walked in the heat about a quarter of a mile into the countryside villages and suddenly there was an ancient temple and a place with monks they were going to do a water blessing 4 of the volunteers did this - they needed a change of clothes with them since what he did was pour water over them for 5 minutes. We had 2 circle meetings in the day to say hello to me and goodbye to Marylin. whole school outside. Then I stayed on till 4.15 with an older group learning English she always does that and I've inherited that. She has been here several times before and has a great friendship with Banyan the tuk tuk driver - she was invited to eat in his house and I was too. In the middle of the village well off the beaten track the journey there was amazing then what a surprise he has a big new house. This was built for him and his wife and 5 sons as a gift from one of the volunteers he has known for years. His wife cooked outside and we ate with only Banyan such kindness from people who are so poor. On way back he showed us the local temple photos ate amazing. Exhausted but need to plan what todo with the classes tomorrow. I have to make up a first aid test and go and have it photocopied in a shop on my way to school tomorrow.
What a fabulous first day .
