Mads and Lucy do South East Asia
On the 23rd we had a 7am coach to the beach town Mui Ne along the coast. We had bought a set coach ticket which would enable us to hop on and off Sinh Cafe coach's whenever we liked for about 25 quid all in. After 6 ish hours we arrived into glorious sunshine at Mui Ne...A lovely little beach town, nothing like I had imagined Vietnam to be. Weather was great, very hot and sunny. We booked into a lovely little guesthouse by the sea, with it's own swimming pool overlooking the beach and cute rooms all facing the sea. Lying in bed you could hear the waves lapping up against the beach! Beautiful.
We both went for a dip in the pool to cool down, was just what we needed after a long journey. As I jumped out of the pool I had a moment of panic...I had to run from the pool to the toilet eek! Not good times!
I couldn't tell which way it was going to come (sorry for those of you cringing now, but I feel you all need to know how bad I felt for the next 4 days!!)...I had a shower to warm up, but 10 minutes later I was being sick. I felt awful, fever, sweats, achy arms and legs. So, for the next few hours I spent my time with my head rested against the toilet feeling like death. It was obvious I had caught whatever Lucy had 2 days before! I tried to sleep it off, and woke a few hours later to attempt some steamed rice. I managed a few mouthfuls before throwing up again! I HATE being sick, I don't cope very well, so at the same time was crying. All I wanted at this moment in time was to hear my parents voice and tell me I was going to be O.K. During the night, I kept having to run in and out of the bathroom, so I didn't feel very rested. Having been asleep for a couple of hours after dinner I woke to find Lucy staring at the sprite bottle beside my bed, a tiny lizard had curled itself around the base. As I picked it up, the lizard jumped off and ran down behind the table. For the next half an hour, we both stood ready to catch the lizard and chuck it outside. Lucy caught sight of it and said 'be ready to open the door...' I stood up ready, when suddenly as the lizard ran closer towards Lucy, she realised it was a cockroach! Ahhhhh....I jumped onto my bed squealing, and grabbed a flip flop ready to smack it. A group of people outside could obviously hear us squealing, as they came to the door to see what all the fuss was about. Instead of helping they just laughed and left us to it...'Cheers guys!'. To be fair, I was stood there in my pj's and face mask so probably looked pretty silly! 24.10.10 I woke feeling rough still, luckily my stomach was a lot better. But I'd developed another strange symptom - My chest had become really tight overnight and I was struggling to take a full deep breath! We decided to rent bikes and cycle to the red sand dunes where we had heard it was good to go surfing. Stupidly we set off in the midday heat - the hottest time of the day. I had bottles of water and rehydration salts with me to try and keep my energy up. The heat was intense! We arrived at the dunes sweaty and almost ready to faint from the heat, I was really struggling to breath properly and I was beginning to panic that something really serious is going on with me! We went up to the sand dunes with a boy who had rented us his sheet of plastic, just walking on the hot dunes was enough for me let alone running up and down them on this sheet. Still, we had a few goes and it was good fun! When we got back to the apartment I took a flu tablet thinking that the swelling in my glands and achey muscles was a sign of a cold... I went to sleep for most of the afternoon, wishing that when I woke the feeling would have disappeared but when I woke for dinner that evening - no suck luck! I hardly managed to sleep as everytime I tried to roll over I got exrutiating pains all across my chest, so much that it made me throw up. 25.10.10 I woke early to speak to mum on skype, I was really panicking so I'd sent an e-mail home the night before asking what I should do. Straight away mum said come off Malerone, it may be a side effect. It was comforting to hear her voice, but when I was feeling so s***ty all I wanted was a cuddle and I burst into tears! After a comforting chat with mum, I attempted some breakfast at a lovely cafe overlooking the sea. At 1pm we had a bus to Dalat, a long windey bumpy track up through the mountains - amazing views! My breathing seemed to gradually get better, possibly a combination of the fresh mountain air and the distration of the minibus driver. He was called 'Giacon', and throughout the whole journey Lucy became his personal assitant. Everytime he saw an animal he would tap Luce on the leg and shout 'dog dog...' and so on for cows, pigs, cats etc. After 5 hours it was VERY annoying!
