Here goes my very first blog entry. Not even sure what a 'blog' is??
Anyway, this Wednesday we hit the three week mark. I think it's safe to say me and Sophie were quite shocke at how quick it has gone. But it also means I have three weeks worth to write about in this short hour I've got in the internet cafe. Which has now become 11 minutes just after signing up and logging in. Nightmare.
I suppose I should start with the journey here. However, it's all quite a blur considering I was pretty depressed after the realisation hit me that I'd just seen my mum and dad for the last time for a year. The flight was fine - apart from the fact that out of 19 of us, Kenya Airways decided to sit me next to Bex. Missed a whole nights worth of sleep.
When we arrived at Entebbe Air Port we were greeted by our country rep, Lucy. We then made our way to MAF Guest House where we would be spending our first few nights. Lucy had arranged for two buses to pick us up, one of which was half an hour late (first real taste of this 'Uganda time' lark). This also meant that we had already started getting hot and sweaty like true Brits due to the extremely hot and sweaty climate.
Over the next few days we lived in pure luxury with good food, hot showers and a shopping centre near by! Until the Saturday when we were met by our host, Andrew and taken to our project. We are now living in a village called Kagoma with Andrew and his family and a few others. Our house is very basic and our room is nice and cosy. We also have our own bathroom with a proper toilet and a freezing cold shower. The house is only about 15 minutes walk from school, although Andrew usually insists on driving us.
We spent the first week meeting the locals, exploring the surroundings (how beautiful is this country??) and becoming familiar with the school etc. We have now been teaching for the past two weeks. I teach only six lessons on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. And mostly senior 1 English and Literature and two senior 3 classes. The first few lessons were very tricky. Mostly due to the fact we turned up at school on the Monday morning and found out we had a class already waiting for us. However we hadn't been told and therefore hadn't prepared any work - oops. Teaching is steadily becoming more easy and I am actually enjoying it a lot now. The kids are lovely although most of the time I'm pretty sure they are mocking me. Senior 3 never fail to make me laugh and after every senior 1 lesson the same kid (really need to learn his name) says "thank you Madam". Also love marking books to find that a few senior 3's have decided to doodle 'Megan Adamson' in the back of their exercise books and used 'when Madam came her skin was white' as one of their examples.
All in all, can't believe how at home I already feel. And if more of these Omlettes are made for breakfast this year is going to be EEEEEASSYYY.
