I'm writing about Lake Bunyonyi a very long time after we actually went, so I'm hoping I can still make it sound as good as it was. That is everything apart from the travelling.. but travelling is never any good in Uganda.
We woke up at around half 4 in the AM and were already by the road side for 6 oclock to catch a taxi to Kampala. (I do have to mention that these taxi's are not at all like taxi's back in England. They are actually 14 seater mini buses that try to cram about 30 people on board including chickens and the occasional goat. The stench of sweat is blissful and someone rubbing their sweaty armpit up and down your face is quite nice too).
Anyway, once in Kampala, Jude (Andrew's brother) helped us find the Horizon bus park where we caught a bus at 10 oclock to take us to Kabale. Like everything else in Uganda, the bus was delayed by about an hour and a half. In which time we were sat on the bus (again filled with wonderful smells) getting so hot I nearly passed out. The rest of the 8 hour journey on the coach was more of the same.. Really sweaty and really numb. Fun fun...
Once in Kabale the very first thing I noticed was that there were so many white people around and it was actually quite freezing. Andrew had told us to take jumpers but I figured we're in Africa, how cold is it really going to be? Quite. For our first night in Kabale, Sophie and I stayed at a hostel I wish I remembered the name of?? All I remember was how excited I was to see that posho was nowhere on the food menu. I had an 'American Cheeseburger' which wasn't all that nice, but hey, it was meat. We had quite a bad nights sleep considering Kabale actually has a few night clubs, and the noise kept us awake. Plus the room was quite dusty so I couldn't stop sneezing which didn't help Sophie getting some sleep either. The morning after, we both enjoyed a nice English Breakfast (or nice enough at least) and then went to meet Sam and Liam in the 'Cafe Royal'.
It was 2 oclock by the time we actually made our way to the lake. Bunyonyi was absolutely gorgeous and if I hadn't left the camera back in Mubende I would actually have pictures to prove it. We all enjoyed an afternoon of Canoeing. Me and Sam partnered at first but couldn't stop the canoe from going around in circles whilst Sophie and Liam sped off. So we had to rethink partnerships and Liam and Sam swapped canoes. We then spent the rest of the afternoon swimming in the lake and then went for an AMAZING meal at the resturaunt.
I won't write about the night time in much detail, I will however say it did result in a pretty early night for Sam epecially. In the morning we enjoyed yet another English breakfast with some really good Ugandan fruit and African tea.
The journey back was an absolute nightmare. When we reached Kampala it was dark (terrifying!!) We made our way to the bus park only to find that noone was going as far as Mubende. By this point I had fallen in quite a large mud puddle where my flip flop had snapped and so I was walking around with one shoe on in the dark in one of the dirtiest cities EVER. In the end we ended up catching a taxi back to Mitiyana where Andrew met us and took us the rest of the way home. Probably the worst journey I have ever had so far, I was so incredibly grateful for a bed that night.
