Chris n' Mel in Thailand
Hi guys...its official...I'm a qualified open water scuba diver, woo hoo!!!!!!!!
yay very chuffed with myself - i was meant to do the whole PADI dive course a few years ago in Oz but it never happened due to a combo of seasickness and fear of the sea and what lurks beneath it...now im going diving with chris in the morning and in a couple days we're going back to the dive site where his dad and rachael saw 6 foot sharks this morning, ahhh!!! (dont worry mum and dad they're reef sharks and quite harmless im told)
my first day of the course was interesting after our night out before, i was dozing off watching the video they show you by the end of the day. now after meeting the world's most annoying person back in chang mai on our trek who kept incessantly asking questions of the guide and was by chance german, i jokingly said knowing my luck ill end up with a bunch of germans on my course. ha ha. guess what i did. at the end of my first day i was thinking with a german accent!!
the guy who owns the dive shop, Big Bubble, which is one of the islands best by the way, is German, and apparently this attracts many other Germans from afar. The young Germans on my course were very nice but it wasn't quite what id hoped for for my fun bunch of people to have a laugh learning to dive with, seeing as they always spoke in german and as i was actually the minority the instructors spoke in german most the time too. occasionally i would be left wondering what the hell was going on and everyone else was doing something so id be like, ok we obviously had that briefing in german then, and attempt to copy what they were all doing. ANYWAY i got over that and after4 days of lots of info about nitrogen bubbles in blood, dive planner tables, how to avoid decompression sickness, and lots of practicing underwater skills at the bottom of the sea inc taking on and off masks, breathing equipment, weight belts and how to float in one spot like a buddah and 4 actual dives..im passed and can go diving to 30 feet with a fellow diver pal anywhere in the world, on our own if we want!
Koh Tao is a beautiful island and in comparison to Koh Phangan and Koh Samui most people who come here come to dive as its considered the best place in Thailand, so theres not massive groups of people looking for girly bars and mcdonalds so theres loads of cool chill out bars along the beach and you can go into town if you want more lively bars. the bay we're staying is small, our first bungalow we stayed in (JP)was right on the beach, as is the dive shop where we leave from most mornings, and the posh hotel where Chris' dad is very kindly putting us up for a few nights has an infinity edge pool that literally looks right out onto the sea and is on the beach.
The couple bars along the beach are great too, although i dont think the same concept would work at home. we've been a couple nights now, and sat on cushions on wooden decking with little tables to put your beer on, with our backs to the bar looking out literally over the sea surrounded by palm trees in pitch black with little lanterns around the bar, mmmmmm nearly fallen asleep there a couple times!
Me and Chris have had a day chilling out by the pool today, its been scorching, had to come out about 3 to play pool and a couple beers to cool down. Seeing as we've got a nice room with wow a TV with HBO and a fridge im off back to watch movies as we've gotta meet at 8.20am for the 2 dives at green and white rock tomorrow, and your not meant to drink much before diving deep. OK so see you and hopefully next time we update we'll have shark spotting tales to tell, aaahhh! :)
By the way just realised its my birthday 2 weeks today and we're home in just over a week so anyone who fancies it we'll be out in town Friday night!! Byee xxxxx
