Chris n' Mel in Thailand
Hi All
Update on the last few days,
we were scheduled to meet up with my Dad, and in order to make sure everything was ok we went to the nice posh hotel he had kindly put up us in for a night to make sure everything was hunky dorey... alas its not a good sign when you get to the reception of the hotel and all the staff keep saying is "construction" over and over whilst pointing to some semi built bungalows.. mmm something amiss here!
Oh yeah - this is after the epic journey we had to get to the resort -after we convinced our sangtheuw driver to cart us all the way to the hotel instead of leaving us in the middle of Bo Phut town with our bags, which is what he was gonna do originally, luckily we know how these things work and cunningly offerred him more money, and could you believe it - he accepted, shocking I know!
But then he got lost!!! Grrr. ahh well, we did eventually make it, the discovered the hotel wasn't ready for us/anyone. The reception staff had a plan though, and took us to another resort just down the road and we got a very nice bungalow next to a very plush pool... dumped our stuff admired the bungalow for a while and then headed to the poolside bar for a beer. (see Pic at top of journal) One turned into a few and pretty soon it was time to go and pick up the folks. Got to the airport easily and were amazed at what we saw... the airport as it turned out wasnt like any other airport either of us have ever seen, i mean dont get me wrong it was cool but it did kinda look like it was all made from straw. As the plane from Bangkok was delayed (shock) we went off form some grub and an ice cream and then sat down and waited next to the runway for the plane to come in..
The Plane came in and we welcomed the new arrivals, and took them back to the resort where pretty soon all 4 of us were chillin in the pool and enjoying the sunshine. After a while everyone was a bit hungry so we all got changed and went and found ourselves a seat next to the beach and ordered a feast, with starters too... splashing out - thanks Dad!
We all had really nice meals and once again marvelled at how nice the food is here and how little it costs. will not be happy when i get back and have to start paying through the nose for everything again.
Went to bed soon after and had a good nights sleep, with Mel even exclaiming afterwards "I didnt even have to put my jumper under the pillow" this was mainly due to the fact that all the pillows we have had since we arrived in Thailand have been flat as pancake, so Mel usually has to construct a 2nd pillow from whatever is lying around so she can sleep. This more than anything shows you how posh the place actually was.
The next day we got up and had breakfast, follwed by a dip in the pool before clambering aboard the Loomprayah catamerang and taking the 1 1/2 hour journey to Koh Tao so we could start diving. Beautiful day once again, so sat up on the deck reading a book and topping up the tan, till we arrived. We were staying on the south of the Island at a place called Viewpoint bungalows so we made our way there and unfortunately because there is no road directly to it we had to lug them over the sand, not too bad for Mel and I but Dad and Rachael had suitcases and had to drag them over the sand... It was a bit of an epic to get there and when we did we were not happy at the standard of accomodation, which was quite expensive, especially as they didn't even have air con.. so left the girls with the bags and went on a bit of a wander to find somewhere else to stay. We ended up staying at JP Resort, which was nice and I had remembered that a friend of mine had stayed there before and said it was ok. Job Done! now all we had to do was get the bags back from Viewpoint - gutted as by this time the sun was blazing and we had all lost approx 2 stone in weight due to unneccesary carrying around of bags.
Still once we got in and settled we all headed into Mae Haad (which is the main town, i think) and went to Gringo's for some Mexican food. Where I got to watch the England game too, bonus...Then we went shopping.. well i say we, i didnt buy anything but Mel got a really nice dress and a t-shirt, Then it was time for a beer, soon the old folks were getting tired so they went back to the bungalows and Mel and I carried on. We found a cool pool hall and ordered ourselves some vodka and started playing, got quite into it and before we knew it, the time was 2am - oops! Mel had to start her PADI course the next day, she wouldnt be diving but still.... so we got a taxi back and dropped off to sleep.
The next day Mel had to get up early to start her course and I had to do a tune up dive as it has been a while since my last one...
We will tell you about the diving in the next installment
