Yesterday was a very lazy one for me and a busy one for Mac. He did his diving off the islands off the coast in Sihanoukville whilst I did practically nothing!
It rained almost all day so I only went out to eat when there was a brief respite - lunch at Mick and Craig's, falafel and a banana shake for $4, very delicious!
Mac got back about 5 and we went for beers with the diving crew. The day hadn't been spoiled by the weather although visibility was not so great, about upto 7 m. But he got two long dives in and had a good time.
We ate at Nyam again as the food is top class, this time we shared sour mango salad, tomatoes stuffed with pork, fish cooked with ginger and a caramelised sauce and jasmine rice. We also got some tapioca and banana pudding to take away for breakfast the next day, as we'd decided to move on and bought tickets to Kampot.
Today (Sun) we checked out about 11 and got picked up by our minibus at 11.30. There were 6 Brits (including us), 1 American and 2 locals in the minibus. It was still raining and the road was severely flooded in places; we saw at least one car abandoned tyre-deep in water!
About 30 mins into the journey we had to stop at a garage to get the wheel bearings/housing replaced as they were knackered so at least an hour was spent there (here actually as I'm writing this from the garage). All good fun. I'd managed to get a booking at Mea Culpa guest house in Kampot just before we left after having tried a couple of places that were full so as I sit here in the rain awaiting the wheel to be put back on I hope the booking remains open as we'll be really late arriving in Kampot (again)! There's some serious travel issues here! But so typical of thus part of the world!
Update from Kampot, 5pm. We eventually left the garage and we all thought 'great, we're on our way at last'. Well I suppose we were but the long way round. We stopped dozens of times and picked up double the amount of people for seats on the minibus, plus various baskets, packages and a sack of durian (the fruit banned in many places that smells of vomit but tastes ok for those who haven't had the pleasure)! The driver said he would drop us at Mea Culpa but he changed his mind when we got to Kampot after 5 hours (instead of the supposed 90 mins); he dropped us all off at a guest house on the other side of town but none of the 7 of us opted for it and Mac and I walked to Mea Culpa where luckily they'd kept the room for us. So now we're on the balcony having a cuppa and chatting to some US expats who work here. The room is ok but no fridge, should be fine though.
Sun 27 May: last night we walked along the riverfront and ate dinner at Wunderbar - we had a jug of beer, battered crispy prawns with lemon-pepper sauce, salad and rice and hot spicy pork and rice for $10, great food and good value. We came back to Mea Culpa and had a beer at the bar then watched a DVD in our room, the English version of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. Most of the accommodation here offer free DVDs, possibly because they don't have much of a satellite signal? It rained again during the night.
This morning we got up late, talked to the Americans again for a while then went out for a look round. It was raining but we had our 50 cent rain coats on! Still damn hot though! We had a huge sandwich at Wunderbar, as the bakery we'd been recommended closes on Sundays. It was two German sausages, bacon and melted cheese in a baguette with coleslaw and fries, VERY filling. To walk it off we crossed the old bridge, walked along the streets on the other duds if the river then came back into town on the new concrete bridge, walked to the market and around some of the shophouses and old buildings. It was pretty drizzly all the time, not great for raking photos, so now we're back in the room and are going to laze with another DVD. Why not?
