I feel my inner nerd is just about contented and ready to go back to sleep soon: I spent the entire day touring around locations around Wellington where they shot LotR. Lemme put it this way: some places are really cool and easy to spot, like Edoras, some places are tricky but you can spot them with some help, and then you got places which are totally impossible to recognize, like Helms Deep. The quarry where they shot helms deep is nowadays completely different from 12 years ago, firstly, every sign had to be removed. Second, it had been filled with dirt and gravel so there was literally impossible to spot it. I am actually that much of a nerd that I thought it was cool just to be on the old sets, but many of them weren't there anymore. It was nonetheless an educating experience. They showed you a crapload of behind the scenes and how the movie came to be.
If you're smart however, I'd check the south island for locations instead. All the mountain ranges, the big landscape shots, all that comes from the south island, often near Queenstown. There is one really cool thing though, and that is the Weta Cave. A mini-museum put up by weta, showcasing their impressive résumé. Anyone in Wellington should check that out. Apart from that, I am really going to miss partying abroad when I get home. The bartender thought people were a bit slow and wanted some more energy so he told everyone to sign up on a list and 20 minutes later we had a contest to win a 30$ bar tab, just like that. Plus 30$ goes a long way in drinking. You could get like 6-7 beers on that. And anytime people just sat down, he got a new competition running.
God, why can't Sweden be like that?
Shame, shame.
One more day in Wellywood and then Taupo.
