Alicia: Today marks our first full week in Huancayo. Has been so much fun. The kids at the community centre where me and mike have started volunteering have been so welcoming and the fact our Spanish isn't the best doesn't seem to matter much to them. They are so comfortable with us one little girl peed herself when Mike gave her a cuddle. Bless :P
As well as the after school club, we both started our Spanish lessons where I have now gained the nickname " Hindu face" and Mike had found a worthy opponent to argue with. Other than that seem to be going well.
Weds and Friday saw the start of my work at a school for disabled kids. Many of the kids are so poor their parents can't afford wheelchairs or taxis so carried them on their backs across town just for treatment. Worried also to hear that the government can only afford to pay for 1 physio to work Tuesday, and are running solely on four students to treat all 50 kids. Now I have the task of supervising and teaching the students too which is difficult seeing as no one other than the doctor speaks any English. On the bright side it's forced me to use my Spanish more and I know they'll appreciate it. Plus the kids are ridiculously cute and I get to play all day :D
Living in the volunteer house has been great. Can't remember if mike mentioned we live with Sandra a German doctor and Orit another volunteer lives nearby which has been nice cos we've been able to go out with their friends too. Friday was particularly interesting, never been to a club at 6pm before and drank some random pisco concoction. Great stuff.
On Sunday we went on a jaunt to a place called Ingenio with a trout farm :S was a nice day out in the mountains until it started pissing down with hail. Bad times. Managed to grab some hot pisco cocktails called Calientitos in the evening which warmed us up.
Monday spent most of the day planning a BBQ but in the end mike had to fry the steaks on the hob as our BBQ provision fell through. Very frustrating but managed to have a nice meal to welcome our two new volunteers and our day off from work. Tried out the cinema later on but Avengers all sold out. Managed to save the day with a pirated Thor DVD for a quid. Cant go wrong with that. Fingers crossed second time lucky tomorrow xxx
