So here I am in Palenque. Palenque itself is nothing really to write home about as it is just a mexican town with many tacky shops, but it does have many cheap resturants and cheap beer. The best thing about Palenque is the host of attractions within driving distance, such as the Palenque ancient ruins which is by far the best we have seen so far. Tikal ruins were impressive owing to its size, number and vast area in which they were spread over through out a dense jungle. Where as Palenque ruins are smaller in size and relatively compact as they are all within a relatively small area. You can feel not only the history and traditions of ancient times in Palenque ruins but you can get a true sense of the social history behind it in so much as you can not just walk around the ruins but also over, through and within the ruins which gives you a better understanding of how people of ancient times lived and it gives you a deeper understanding of your traditions, beliefs and practices. Palenque is set in wonderous surroundings, set in rich green open fields and ontop on small lush mounts, surrounded by dense rainforest hosting a beautiful waterfall and amazing vegetation and wildlife. So all in all I feel that this site truelly represented ancient Mayan history, traditions and beliefs as you could not only view it from afar but really see it and get a true sense of what it was like to live in ancient times in such communities.
So after a great day at the ruins we then drove to Misol Ha Waterfalls, and what a breathtaking place this is. Deep in the rain forest is the aweinspiring vision of a small piece of paradise. The impressive sight of the high waterfall, with cascading water making a beautiful lagoon in which you can swim in the clear warm water seems like something from a movie. It is breathtaking and the scenary was amazing (gorgeous almost naked men jumping around in the water-heaven!)
From there we drove to Agua Azul, part of the same water source just 2 hrs drive away. Again a great sight as hosted impressive water falls and a great place to swim in the gentle rapids of the cascading water.
So all in all a great day and amazing sights.
Now no to San Cristobal, lets see that it has to offer....
