Shaking The Tree 2005
A cautionary tale !
After leaving Australia Zoo, we headed to Noosa. As it is the school holidays here and everyone told us how busy they would be we trawled through the bible, Lonely Planet, and chose a backpackers call Costa Bella. We phoned ahead and for $46 per night we could have a twin share. Bargain we thought and merrily headed to Noosa.
With spirits high we eventually found our place for the night. Bruce the owner greeted us in a friendly manner and offered us a free beer ! We handed over our $46 and went to the room. However, the keys would not open the door, back we trot to Bruce who for another $9 offers us a 2 bedroom apartment! Great we say, we'll take it. He takes the money and heads off in the sunset to enjoy a night on the town.
Well we walked in and were hit initially buy the smell. How do I descibe it, take 2 younger brothers, get them to play sport for a week without showering, let them sleep in their sports gear and then leave their trainers in a room without windows for another 2 weeks. I think you get the drift.
There was sand on the sofas, cobwebs in every corner, the beds had stains I would rather not think about. The linen was clean but nowhere near a thick enough barrier between me and the sheets. The light switches were caked in gunk. The last straw came when we open the kitchen cupboard to find a cockroach on it's back !
Caroline looked at me I looked at Caroline - we worked out that to cut our losses we would have lost 20 pounds between us. Plan B was to get so drunk that we would not notice the roaches and the dirt. $55 was probably not enough to do this, so we got back in the car and headed into Noosa.
We drove straight to Hastings Street, the main street, with all the cafe's and bars and tried a few hotels there but they rainged from $400 to $200 per night! A little out of our price range. Then a receptionist took pity on us and phoned a hotel she used to work at and they had a one bedroomed apartment for $110. Bargain.
It was lovely clean and had a view over one of the Noosa lakes.
Over a bottle of vino a pact was made that never again would be lured into the dark and stale world of the very budget accommodation.
However, I have to say we stayed at the YHA in Hervey Bay and this was another world. We had a 1 bedroomed apartment and this was spotlessly clean and had a fab restaurant on site. The restaurant had an in house dog called Caeser who looked like a rotweiler cross and just cleaned the plates of all the steak eaters. What a life.
Therefore if I do not stay at backpackers as often as I should it is because I still have flash backs to the backpackers at Noosa.
Love
Lynne
