This morning I packed up and checked out of the hostel. Laura and Janelle followed me up to the glacier in the car as we thought we should at least try to see it. When we reached the end of the pathway the cloud had lifted a little so we could see about half of the glacier. The others went past the warning barrier and walked up to the ice. While I was waiting for them to return the cloud lifted and I could see the entire glacier which was impressive. I then drove up to Greymouth, in the rain again. The drive involved going through mostly forest of pine and tree ferns intersperced with cattle and deer farms. I almost drove over a couple of pukeko that were sitting in the middle of the road. I had to go over another couple of one lane bridges, this time they were ones the train goes over. I'm staying at the Neptune International backpackers for two nights, then I'll head across to the east coast. There aren't many people about and the town is shut as it is Sunday which isn't great. I don't think this place will measure up to Franz but just because there were a great group of people staying there. I was only out of the hostel there once as well as the weather was so bad. I'm just going to relax this evening and plan to head up to Punakaki tomorrow to see the pancake rocks. I don't think I could have coped very well on the glacier as the French girl went on the hike and said she ached all over even though she is very sporty. I would have been complaining about the pains in my leg.
