After checking out this morning I drove the 42km to Punakaki to see the pancake rocks. I did the walkway which actually went over the top of the rocks. When I got back to the car there was a large bird wandering under the car and I had to chase it before I could drive off. The birds in New Zealand really are stupid. I then had to drive back down to Greymouth to get onto the Lewis Pass Highway. The first hour was driving through mostly flat land with cattle farms. then I had to drive through forest which wasn't as dense as on the Haast Pass as it was beech forest. The sun waas shining all the way which made for a much nicer drive. The scenery was spectacular once I was through the forest with views of vast plains with rivers weaving through them and mountains in the distance. I spent the evening in Hanmer Springs chatting with English Hannah, Swedish Hannah, American Laura, Swiss Gregor and American Evan. Evan and Gregor are actually cycling round the South Island.
