It was very overcast and raining when I left Wanaka for the long drive north to the glaciers. The first part of the journey was over undulating hills with fields of sheep. Then I drove along twisty mountain roads before reaching flatlands. The final part of the journey was through forest which went through the mountains. It doesn't half give you a shock when you are driving along and a waterfall thunders down beside the road. I must have driven across two dozen one lane bridges the worst of which was the Haast bridge which is half a mile long. It teemed with rain the whole four and a half hour journey. I also saw pukeko at the side of the road. They are strange purple birds about the size of a chicken which have bright red beaks. As it rained all day I spent the day chatting to the other girls in the hostel. There are two English, one Canadian, one South African, one French and one from Newtownards. I will try and check out the glacier tomorrow if the weather clears up but the heli-hike is out as the weather is not due to clear up until Tuesday.
