We had a lazy start today and headed to the airport. A wee mix up nearly had us missing the flight but we made it :) Jet Star this time Ryan Air style but a short, bumpy flight later and we were in Saigon getting another safety brief. Not quite as bad this time though. We walked round to the main points of the city, the best being a large post office designed by Mr Eiffel. We had a meal out and a few drinks on a street corner again. This time in a bar. A few games of pool too which I am seriously out of practise with, even with my shoes off :(
The next day a few of us decided to get up early to squeeze in the national war museum and the Cu Chi tunnels. The museum was really good and helped me to piece together Vietnam's complicated history. There were some horrible photos and statistics from the Vietnam war and some interesting stories. It took a wee while to reach the Cu Chi tunnels but they were incredible! The size and complexity of the tunnels as well as the innovative strategies used by the Viet Cong were mind boggling. Claustrophobia was not an option. We confirmed that we were Westerners who could at least fit in the original tiny openings of the tunnels. We also tested out a short length of the 'Westerner friendly', slightly enlarged underground tunnels. Although I like to think I could go in and live in the tunnels if I was trying to save my life, I am NOT a fan!
Throughout our tour of the jungle area we could hear gunfire and, although we were aware of the shooting range to try your hand at the weapons used at the time, it was still a bit disconcerting. :-/ A really interesting tour though.
That night some of us went to the Jewish centre in the city to sample some Kosher food and I learned a bit about Judeism as one of our travelling family is Jewish. It was a quiet wee place and we had a lovely meal and chatted to one of the guys there about all sorts. Not only is this trip a food tour but I'm learning about lots of different cultures and religions. It's brilliant! :D
