Day 5: Thurday, August 6th
Last night 2 of my roommates and I walked up the street for some ice cream. Living in San Jose is so much fun! Ive got the bus system down. All your essentials are at your fingertips. Although things are small and run down, it is a simple way of living. I love it. Ive made so many awesome friends here. Everyone is pretty chill and we all get along. It makes it easy to go out and do stuff! All in all, I love San Jose and I am just thrilled to see some much more of the country in the upcoming weeks!
Today was another stressful day at my volunteer placement. Luckily, Alexa, the girl who works the shift after me, came and worked with me this morning. It was nice having her there, however it was still a huge headache. I love the children and mainly just feel sorry for them that they are being raised in such poor circumstances. There is literally nothing to play with. The daycare is in the process of being painted so we could not be inside at all today. They have a tiny patio outside that is barricaded, so there is not room to run or even do much. There are barred windows with a rope tied around it and we use that to jumprope. We also have two beach balls, so I played volleyball, soccer and basketball with the boys. Suprisingly, the children are pretty well behaved. The get along with each other and they all love me. We communicate with no problems because their level of Spanish is little and usually they will speak slow for me. They understand everything I say to them in Spanish, so that has been a lot of fun. I have loved using my Spanish so much. I feel like Im getting better and better and picking up new words everyday. Its awesome!
Last night, my host mom and I had probably close to a 2 hour conversation. I cant stop saying HOW MUCH I LOVE SPEAKING SPANISH. I definitely speak better Spanish than anybody else in our house, so I have fun translating back and forth from my roommates to our host mom. I feel like a pro. Im excited that I will be taking Spanish classes at my university when Im home. Fluency is definitely something I know I want to achieve.
This morning, one of my roomies woke up with pink eye. She couldn't open her eyes! So we had to guide her to the Farmacia where she was able to see a doctor for free and get some eye drops. I kinda had to abandon her at the hangout spot so I could go to my placement, but I had to take her back to our house when I came back at 2.
The strangest thing happened to us while we were waiting at the bus stop. Some old guy started talking to me in his broken English and was telling me that I need to be cautious all the time because someone could put a gun to my head at any given moment. I was thinking "uhh okay that doesn't make me feel any better about talking to you." So I just kinda ignored him. But then he started telling me that God sent me here to Costa Rica to be a savior to everyone else and that I was going to save everyone from the devil. I was trying sooo hard not to burst out laughing. I was so confused. So I just kinda nodded my head and then he started doing some kind of catholic ritual and then he pulled out his credentials and there was some kind of certificate of the bible that he received and he started quoting biblical scriptures to me. Meanwhile, I was trying to scoot away while his eyes were like rolling around in the back of his head hahaha. In this moment I honestly had no idea what to do. I didn't know whether I was terrified or hysterical. Then he started telling me what bus I should get on and I was like "no no that's okay." lol. it was so weird. Even thinking about it now I'm laughing.
On a different note, I booked a really fun trip with this dude I met for tomorrow! I'm really excited! We're going River Rafting and Zip Lining. It's going to be a full day type of thing so I'm super stoked about that.
