Lynda and Fred Travels
Well it is not hard to tell Fred's family come from the Lakes District....it is full,of "thwaites"....every street is a thwaites.....birththwaite, crossbirthwaite, and many many towns with thwaites in it..bleathwaite, rossthwaite......there is even the Thwaite brewery. Well there is a town called Crossthwaite where we think Fred's family originated. We drove there...again a very beautiful,drive...narrow streets, lots of trees over avenue, glimpses of the lakes, huge expensive houses...still stone...on the lakes. We went through village taking pictures and then went to church. The priest looked up a book of gravestones for us and there was a Margaret Elizabeth Crossthwaite who died in 1917 so we are assuming she is related somehow....we traipsed through the graveyard looking for her and any others but only found her grave....some of the tombstones were so old the letters were rubbed off! We then drove to Kendal for a coffee and explore the town. On the way we passed a huge rock escarpment and took a walk along the top. It went for miles and you have a beautiful 360 degree view of the valley from up there....just beautiful! Then we drove to the bottom of Lake Windemere and stopped at a marina....all built of stone ...unreal....for an ice cream......continuing home north along Conniston water and then to Ambleside and back to windemere! Lovely drive. Last day here so home to pack a bit and Fred to rest. Then out to a lovely dinner in the guest house next door...I had lamb which was beautiful and Fred the pork. Then local cheeses which taste great over here! It is light so long here...does not get dark till 11pm and is light again at 4am! We are having a heat wave here and I can now understand why the papers are always full of people suffering a heat wave in England....they have no idea of how to keep cool....no air conditioning, not even a fan....almost bought one ourselves cause the room is so hot but suffered instead!
