Myself an Aussie and and English couple decided to hire a car for two days to visit some of the surrounding areas! We left about 9 in the morning and set off in our way out of salta! After about an hour of driving we hit some truly amazing scenery. Just one long winding road with mountains on either side coloured with reds, orange, greys and greens! We also went into some coves made in the rocks and the sky was bright blue so a fantastic day for a road trip!
We stopped off at a winery and got a lovely bottle of red between us with some salad and empanadas! We then carried on to cafayate and found ourselves a little hostel which was the cheapest place I have stayed in Argentina.
That evening we just went out and enjoyed a bit more wine- when argentina after all! We found a little local place to eat with really cheap food which is always good when you keep spending a fortune on steak everywhere else!
The next day we got up ready for a trek to a waterfall! Wearing £2 trainers from primark was a awful idea but I made it! It was quite hard to find the trail because there wasn't one so we spent two hours scrambling over rocks and trying to jump across the river until we found the waterfall! We had one stop off for lunch and for some swimming but I stupidly forgot any swim stuff but may have been a good thing as the water was freezing!
When we arrived back at the entrance we just decided to head back to salta as it was 4pm and then we could stop on the return journey and take a few more pictures of the scenery!
That evening we went out for steak under someone's recommendation- bad idea and for some reason we did not pick up on the clues that the restaurant would be awful. A few tips
Don't eat in the castle eat in the local place across the road
Don't eat in an empty restaurant there is a reason
Don't trust a vegetarian when it comes to recommending steak!
It was so awful we had to go on a steak crawl and get a second steak at a good place! We went in and got one massive steak between 4 of us and a bottle of wine. The waiter looked at us like we were crazy but luckily I got one final good steak in Argentina before heading to chile :)
