LINDA'S TALES OF TRAVEL AND OTHER CATASTROPHES
Hi everyone!
I have now been back in England for about a week and am now staying in Sevenoaks, which is in the 'greenbelt' area just outside London.
Since I have been here we have explored an old heritage building (as seen in the photo), made a couple of trips into London to drink beers in the sunshine (yes, that's right, sunshine in London) and have seen some interesting exhibitions at the Tate Modern gallery.
We have also done a couple of day trips. The first was to Brighton which is a seaside town filled with a rather ecclectic mix of people (mainly owing to the student population). I am not sure about the whole stones in the place of sand thing they have going on with their beaches here (!) but it was still lovely to visit. There is also an awesome building called the Royal Brighton Pavillion built by King George the something or other... It is such an odd building, very ornate but inspired by oriental designs - quite uncommon for the time. The building has always been quite controversial owing to it being so excessively furnished (the chandelier in the dining room is the most ornate thing I've ever seen I think!) but it is fantastic they they have been able to restore and maintain it.
Yesterday we went on another day trip to Cambridge which was absolutely gorgeous. It helped that we had perfect weather but I think the city would impress at any time of year. We visited a couple of the colleges and museums and just generally wandered around the streets. We also managed to have some Pimms (for those who don't know it is a summer drink very popular over here) in the sunshine.
Today we visited an old London market before going over to Hyde Park. We passed by the Peter Pan statue and spent the afternoon near the Princess Diana Memorial - which is a splended creation of running water where people can sit and dip there feet it! Once again we managed to have a few drinks in the sunshine (it's a tough life what can I say?).
