Didn't sleep in as late as the others so had breakfast and headed to the beach for a little while before I met up with Tatjana, Linda and Janneke and we hired a golf cart. It was about $40 for most of the day. It was pretty fun! We just cruised around the island, went all over but the best bit is where the hostel is. Went back down the beach later and then I played about 8 games of beach volleyball with one girl and a million guys- apparently to this israeli guy I am 'very strong!' haha retarded to me though! Just had dinner (I had one of the cheapest things because I only had $43 pesos since I couldn't find my card from the night before with about $10 equivalent with it! Idiot! Had nachos but they weren't like our nachos!! There were so many beans (i couldn't afford meat!) which are black not reddish like ours- and no salsa just cheese. Didn't eat that many. Went to bed pretty early..didn't find my card!
Rose pretty early this morning to get the 8am ferry. Was pretty annoyed when I found my havaianas broken out near the volleyball court- someone must have done it deliberately. It's too hot for any other shoes! But sneakers it was- went to the ferry- they go every half an hour so didn't have to wait long, but got a taxi in cancun to the ADO bus station where I had 10 mins before the bus to tulum departed - which was good because the next one didn't leave for another hour and a half. Was a three hour trip- I took second class but I think first class is less stops- my bus kept picking up randoms all along the way-mates of the driver I think! Haha
Made it to tulum and had read kates fb msg that her, britt and belinda were going to be next door in the internet cafe! Was great to see some familiar faces!! Had lunch and then some delicious real fruit iceblocks. Waited at the terminal with the girls then they left and I checked into the 'weary traveller'.. Got a taxi to the beach because the free hostel shuttle had left for the days trips so cost me about $5.. Caught it back though. The beach was long, blue water and white sand- more waves than the other mexican beaches I've seen so far.. Reminded me of elliston a bit- was a long beautiful beach! Could see the ruins on the cliff but didn't actually visit them. Was a nice setting though!
Went for a walk along the street (its basically on a hwy) and attempted to find a supermarket but only found a dodgy small one, then just hung around at the hostel for a bit trying to work out my plans for my trip! Chatted to a few people then went to bed! There was a dog going mental all night- barking like crazy- so iPod it was!!
Woke up pretty early and used the wi fi for a little while then went to get breakfast. There was a choice of pancakes, toast, cereal, eggs and toast or something. I felt like something substantial of eggs and toast but turns out the lady gives u the eggs and bread and you cook it yourself- wanted to get the bus as soon as I could so changed it to toast with butter and strawberry jam (what I've had almost every morning! Haha) and checked out. I chucked a couple of the butter and jam containers for future use when I can buy a bread roll or something! But the heat doesn't go so well with butter so hopefully it doesnt leak in my bag like it did in canada when I bought some!
Walked the 100m to the bus station and asked about the 2nd class bus to Chetumal- 5.5 hours and didn't leave for over an hour- first class cost a bit more more but took two hours less and left in 10 mins! I remember reading in the lonely planet about the buses being really cold- and it was!! The air con was ridiculous so I curled up into a ball.
Got to Chetumal after rejecting a guy who I thought was harassing me ended up selling me a ticket for the boat to caye caulker from chetumal instead of me getting the bus to Belize city then a ferry across. Kate had said this way was easy and it was - I would have saved a few dollars going via Belize but is more dangerous and takes longer so I took the easier route! The only problem was that it didn't leave for 4 hours.. So got a taxi to the ferry and left my bag there and showed them my passport (it's cool to show my british one!) and wandered around the town in search of something to eat with my last few Mexican pesos..!
Finally got on the boat and apparently it was a calm ride today.. Not so much! Took about 2 hours once we got our stuff off and into Belize immigration (a tiny stool in a little room on the dock). We had to wait for an hour for the next boat from San Pedro to Caye Caulker. I went with an English couple around to an ATM (I need to exchange my $220 australian still though!!!!!!) and got something to eat/drink. The boat trip over to Caye Caulker was a bit more pleasant and was chatting to an Austrian couple and a french guy. Was pretty easy to find the hostel 'Yumas/Tinas' that I'd heard about so some others joined me and asked about a room. The room was small but only two bunk beds and a chilled out place with beach volleyball and hammocks etc so was ok!
Wandered around to get some decent food bcos I was starving, ran into the three guys from my boat- an American/Asian, a Swiss guy and the French guy.. Had tea with them (was delicious!!!) and a cocktail which was about $10 in total.. Also had a free run shot off this cool hanging bamboo shot holder that held 8 of our shots and the guy tipped it up! Wasn't too strong but was yummy. Went to find the supermarket which was pretty stingy so just bought some breaky stuff and headed back to the hotel! Lay out on the hammock and went to bed!
