Got to cancun yesterday.. Wandered around to try and find the hotel from the bus station for quite a while, obviously had that I'm lost' look on my face because a friendly guy that works at a supermarket helped me out- turns out I'd walked straight past it and it was next door to the supermarket- I'd taken the long way round!
Had a shower and stuff to help my body recover from the long airport stint and adjust to the humidity! Decided I needed the beach so headed towards 'Zona Hoteles' and didn't take long before I knew I should have taken the bus! Walked a lot of kilometres! But eventually started walking along the beach so it was okay. Was pretty hot so had a few dips along the way-the first section of the beach in the hotel zone I was average- white white sand but not very nice water- as I got towards some of the bigger well known hotels it became turquoise and beautiful. Had a bit of difficulty getting a bottle of water- they dont accept US $1 coins ( only just found out they even existed when I was in seattle) and I have a few of them! Had to get the guy to walk around and exchange my $50 note for pesos..all for a $2.50 bottle of water! Walked through the hotel lobbies to get on/off the beach which is annoying but had heard you just have to pretend you are staying there and walk through- because for kilometres you basically can't get onto the beach without going through a hotel!
Caught a bus back that dropped me near walmart- I wanted to see what it was like since you always hear about it on movies.. Had some delicious and cheap looking fruit and pastries that tempted me! Bought some pineapple, mangoes and bananas-yum!! Also bought some kids goggles because it saves me possibly hiring a mask and snorkel set but don't want to lug one around!! Had forgotten the goggles i had at home haha.
Went for a wander around the downtown area (better without my backpack but not much to see) and then took it pretty easy at the hotel!
Today was a great day- except the start was retarded- after the old Swiss lady snoring away last night I was pretty tired! Earplugs didn't help so had music on most of the night! Hiked down Tulum Ave (the main north- south route through Cancun) and waited ages for the right bus to come - a couple came past but didn't stop because they were in the other lane- was retarded because I waved at them! Almost gave into one of the millions of taxis that beeped at me when I flagged one down! In my best 'Puerto Juarez?' and 'cuanto es' Spanish I got a ride for a little while until I had to change buses (didn't know this) and pay another fare ($10 MXD = almost $1 AUD) - extra because I had my backpack (someone who spoke English informed me of this) and then eventually made it to Puerto Juarez.. Only a few minutes later the ferry left and I was on my way to Isla Mujeres - which looked absolutely fantastic from the plane!!!! It cost me about $7.
Found the hostel easily but wasn't able to check in yet- so left my stuff there and went straight to 'Playa Norde' aka North beach- fell in love instantly! Was perfectly blue water and white white sand... It was a shame that most of the beach had deck chairs from the hotels along it- no where near as bad as cancun though. Went for a walk around and back to the hostel. Finally met some young/cool/blonde people- a couple of Swedish girls.. And I also managed to finally guess my code for my padlock! Stoked because I hadn't been able to get it off since i left Australia and needed something to lock the locker so I could leave my SLR and passports there.. Went for a walk again and did some swimming and sunbaking attempts (I almost felt brown till I got here!) then went back to the hostel again..
Had tea with the Swedish girls Tatjana and Linda and a Dutch girl called Janneke.. A few more people joined the table including an English guy called James, a few more Europeans and a couple of Israelis.. We played some cards- a****** and spoons which went nicely with some live music and a few coronas for $20 pesos which is just under $2 each...! The hostel bar closed at 11pm and went out onto the beach outside the hostel and they had some Mexican music playing with the occasional dance track! I just sat around with a few Israeli guys (I didn't know Israelis travelled so much!) and Tatjana and a few others! Had a free tequila shot from the bar tender for us all, but along with the coronas the alcohol didn't really affect me! Got to bed at about 3:15- the Israeli girl in my room and Linda were pretty drunk! Was funny!
