Have been on the island now for a couple of days and it is so peaceful. We're making the most of it as according to others who have been to the north the rest of india wont be so relaxed!
The homestay is located just on the water so there is plenty to do here. as food is inclided we have had some interesting breakfasts - rice noodles, banana fritters and lots of cury - which Ive skipped for a couple of days!
At the homestay we were able to explore the backwaters very easily. One morning we took a bike ride on the opposite island for a couple of hours. This meant we had to get ourselves and the bikes into an old wooden canoe to cross (this is the local ferry). The island had rice paddies that were ready to be picked, so we saw fields with 20 or so people in each picking the rice by hand.
That evening we took a motor boat ride for a couple of hours around the canals. It was so picturesque and peaceful, so we were able to see loads of the wildlife as well as how people live - washing themselves and clothes in the water, fishing, swimming. Will upload some pictures of the waters asap!
The day before we took a 3 hour walk around another island, and our tour explained about the different rice that is grown here, as well as how the boats are made, how educated the locals are (95% literate!) and how that has benefitted life in Kerela.
Also in the morning we were given a cookery lesson by the mum of the owners at the homestay (pictured) She gave us many recipes and told us how she used many different spices and cooking techniques in her antique kitchen! In kerela they use a wood fire oven, so it was extremely smokey and hot - not sure how she copes with that every day - we struggled after a couple of hours!
Tomorrow we will travel to Munnar - a tea plantation in the mountains - so it will be extremely different to here!
