Lucy's Big Adventure!
Hi everyone, good news, after what feels like ages, we're finally connected to our own computer again! YEAY! Which SHOULD mean you'll be able to start seeing some photos & things.
We have now left the farm in Adelaide, had a great 8 days there doing very basic easy work, Mainly just feeding the horses twice a day, looking after the veggie patch & patching up fences, Gavin's been very good at hooking up new electric fences and has really enjoyed doing it. It has been a great experience, we had to rescue a couple of new born lambs as their Mother wasn't looking too well after they'd been born so we rushed the 3 of them off to a warm dry sheep shed and had a nice cuddle with the lambs to keep them warm! The farm had 28 horses to look after, including 5 foals, unfortunately the horses were more for breeding so we didn't get to ride any of them but working with them has given us both a lot more confidence with working with large horses. We had a good job of feeding the cattle every other day which involved Gavin driving the tractor (Like a big child!) a giving a large bale of hay to them, sounds easy enough? But when you have to go through a field of 28 hungry horses first who chase you for the hay, then try to attempt to get through 3 gates without letting of them in or out of them to then get to a field of hungry cows, including one very large one with big horns, who was slightly crazy, and insisted on charging into the hay bale to try to eat it, it wasn't very easy at all.. But still lots of fun! I had a great experience when I got trapped in a chicken coop with the largest of the horses on the farm who wanted to eat what I was feeding the chickens so he forced himself into the very small coop, wedged himself in so I couldn't get out and then another quite hungry horse decided to come in behind him and push him in further, this was then followed by the farm's dog chasing the chickens outside the coop, making them flap about and spook the horses which made the horses more insistent on coming into the chicken coop and pushing me further into it.. I don't know how I got out of it but I was laughing about it for ages afterwards because it was one of those things that should have been captured on film to get the full affect of the chaos, and me being absolutely freaked out and scared sh**less!!!
We are now sitting in our gorgeous camper van in a caravan park somewhere on the outskirts of Adelaide! We are attempting the massive journey to Perth tomorrow, the van is booked in for a service first thing in the morning and then we're off. It should take about a week, depending on how often we stop. Its been great so far, as soon as we got out of Sydney I was happy to drive, and its been amazing to just drive for miles on roads of nothing, seen lots of kangaroos along the way, both dead and alive on the roadside. Had a great stop over last night at a Forest Campsite, we pulled up and were the only ones there. The Forest Ranger offered to take us for a 4 wheel drive tour of the forest which was great, and took a good 2 hours, then when we got back to the campsite, he asked if we would prefer to have the use of a warm double bed, shower & electricity if we wanted it in his house in the forest - We off course took him up on the offer and had a great evening with a few beers with him. I know you're not meant to do that with strangers but he was a great guy, only 25 and didn't seem to look like a mass backpacker murderer - Honest!
I think that's about it, it seems like ages ago since Sydney but we are loving seeing different things. Hope to keep the website updated with photos and travel entries so keep an eye on it, but I'll let you know when I update it.
Hope you are all well.
Lots of love from us both
